I am in the market for a smart tv. 42 - 50".   A friend, has an older Ambilight Philips tv and I always really liked the effect. Philips don't seem to be available in Ireland any more. Does RS stock the up to date ambilight sets and if so,  which would you recommend? If Philips not available which other Brand would you suggest.  Currently have Samsung ? 7 series, Quite chunky and Netflix etc linked up through playstation.  Need good, future proofed tv but not necessarily all bells and whistles..  I'd be grateful for any input as a bit baffled with the jargon.  Budget circa 1K (+?)

    Thanks. Looks good.
I was wondering if anyone knew why Philips no longer available here tho'? Does the fact that they're not sold here any more make it a bad idea to be even thinking of getting one?

    Xraylady,

apologies for the delay getting back to you and its really awful that Philips TV's are pretty much unavailable on the Irish market anymore - a few years ago Philips Europe took a decision to sell off part of their TV business to a Far Eastern company and part of the fallout was that Philips TV's were no longer distributed by Philips in several European countries and unfortunately Ireland was one of the countries selected.

we do keep making representations to Philips UK ( where a limited range is still available) as the new ranges ( as ever!) are really excellent and many, many people like yourself really love the ambilight feature - however the last time we asked, the guys at Philips UK have said they have no current plans to re-launch in Ireland - we should see them again in the next few weeks at the IFA show in Germany so if there is any update we will let you know.

In the meantime Panasonic & Sony have pretty much taken over as our quality TV brand, we do stock LG / Samsung / Toshiba and many other brands as well but Pana and Sony do seem to have excellent ranges this year.

Apologies again for the delay getting back to you and keep me posted if we can assist in any way,

    Best regards,

    Thanks John,
Can I just ask which Sony would you recommend? Want smart TV , HD but don't want to go mad on spec such as 4K as would only use for TV, Netflix, Saorview, Internet browsing . Crisp picture and user friendly most important. Which would be most current Sony of that type?

    Hi Xraylady,

There are a few Sony models worth having a look at, depending on size etc

Theres the Bravia KDL48W705 - http://euro.richersounds.ie/p-201311-bravia-kdl48w705cbu.aspx at €748 - a 48" full HD TV with smart function to give you apps like Netflix etc

Next up is the KDL43W756 - http://euro.richersounds.ie/p-201392-bravia-kdl43w756cbu.aspx at €759 - this is a 43" model with the same smart functions etc but has a higher refresh rate, which means a smoother picture especially in fast moving images like sports/fast action movies etc

Then theres the KDL50W755 - http://euro.richersounds.ie/p-201393-bravia-kdl50w755cbu.aspx at €929 - a 50" model, again with smart functions and the higher refresh rate

All of these 3 models come priced including delivery and a 6 Year Guarantee!!

Just a curve ball to throw in too, you said you weren't particularly looking for 4k, but there is a Panasonic model - TX48CX400 - http://euro.richersounds.ie/p-201483-viera-tx48cx400b.aspx - at €899 which is a 4k and 3d TV - purely mentioning this one as you use Netflix, and they are one of the providers at the fore as far as 4k TV is concerned so its worth considering - also the panasonic smart menus etc are incredibly user friendly - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_5Y_3keyfI

Have a look at the above and if any others catch your eye, or you have any other questions, please let us know

    Regards
    Brian

Thanks for that Brian. Appreciate it!
Actually , looked at than Panasonic link - Does that set allow wifi connection for Netflix and browsing. I just see Ethernet mentioned . Also , current TV is Samsung ? 7 series and have Samsung soundbar. Would it be compatible with the Pana?
    Thanks.

    HI xraylady,

have just double checked and it is definitely wifi as well. Generally I would say to use wired if possible, just to avoid any interference/wireless issues but it will do wifi connection if needed

    Cheers

If you are twitchy about using wifi for streaming ( and you should be as it can frequently buffer) you should have a look at the TPlink Powerline internet over mains solution - these make any AC socket into a wired Ethernet point for your home internet and with virtually no loss of speed - I use them at home personally as I line in an older house with serious wifi issues !
