She's a lot easier to overtake as a single bike than a car. That's pretty obvious. Drivers lose patience, as I witnessed, and overtake dangerously.
I'm happy enough to wait for a chance to overtake safely myself. I just wanted to know what the car was for really.
People often complain about group cyclists with a slow escort vehicle, this looked like an extreme version of that.

There's no way someone could have safely overtaken her alone without crossing the white line.

The other thing to consider is that one cyclist + one car probably takes up about as much road space as a group of say eight cyclists two abreast.

Oh, I see the problem now!

As witnessed in a lot of videos they do try, and then move back in too fast and close to the cyclist. At least with a car that's somewhat minimised.

Is the driver legally obliged to "keep up with traffic". I heard of someone who was done for speeding slightly over the limit on a road which is very common to see cars speeding on (rochestown avenue, near bakers corner), this is since many parts of it are quite open and there would be no driveways immediately at roadside cars figure they can go faster.

After that they were very cautious, going at most 5mph below the limit. They were pulled in by the garda and told they were to speed up as they were not "keeping up with traffic", I was not sure if it would fall under a law.

A quick google of "illegal to drive too slow" lists "impeding traffic" from sites around the world
No person shall drive upon a highway at such a slow speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic
In Florida, the minimum speed on interstates is 40 mph except in those areas where the speed limit on the interstate is 70 mph, then the minimum speed is 50 mph.
Sgt Judson wrote that while there is no specific offence for driving too slow, it can be categorised as driving without due care and consideration and could result in police action.

I think it would depend on the speed limit, the speed the car is doing, and how long it was travelling at that speed.

For example, it would be permissible to drive a tractor at 50kph in a 80kph zone. But you may get done for it if you did it for 40 minutes and neglected to take any opportunities in that to let faster moving traffic behind you past.

On a wet road, I would question if they have given themselves enough distance to stop and though they may be competent and indeed confident, could possibly be taken for "without reasonable consideration" or whatever that FPN is

I don't know what the biggest WTF is with this, the trucker thinking this looked cool, or the moron who's first thought on it was to ban cyclists.

Many vehicles are legally restricted to a limit which is way below the posted limit. A double deck bus is legally restricted to 65km/h yet perfectly legal to use on on a motorway with a posted limit of 120km/h. While a motorway will have at least 2 lanes, if the same bus was on a 'normal' road with a 100km/h limit, there would be no obligation on the driver to take opportunities to allow faster vehicles to pass.

have shimano or campagnolo ever reissued a groupset? was at bloom at the weekend and there was a nice old concorde with shimano 600 locked behind one of the food stalls. much cleaner looking than modern drivetrains. i'm sure there would be a small market for it?

There's a premium for NOS (New old stock) bike parts on ebay etc
A lot are not actually NOS (just lightly used) but some are, if it's in the original box and rare they can go for silly prices.

I realised this week that my children are probably going to grow up thinking Carlton Kirby's name is "F**king Carlton Kirby".

And from a web page about Escobar (http://www.alpsandes.com/posts/clinginquisition.com/2009/11/pablo-escobar-guerrillas-and-my-dream.html), caption for a photo:
Gonzalo Marin, a talented Colombian cyclist who rode for one of Escobar's teams (note his shorts.) This particular team was meant to support and spread the word about Escobar's legitimate political aspirations. Marin, sadly, was later assassinated by Escobar's men. [Picture scanned from Matt Rendell's book Kings of The mountains]

    and another
Pictured here with his family, Alfonzo Florez was the first Colombian to ever wear the Tour's polka dot jersey (in 1983), he also won the amateur Tour de France in 1982. Florez was gunned down by traffickers affiliated with Escobar in 1992.

    and…
Armando Aristizabal was part of the Cafe De Colombia team, and raced for the team in European races. His body was found outside Medellin in 1987. His hands were bound, he had been blindfolded, and his body showed signs of torture.

Anyone cut through Connolly Hospital on a regular basis by bike? I normally do if I'm coming from the Phoenix Park/Castleknock as I find it handier than waiting for the lights on the Snugborough road (nice little ramp too).

There's a painted on cycle track through the grounds, and the parking barrier at the Waterville exit was short enough to allow a cyclist on the track to pass through. The barrier was missing a few days ago, but it was back today spanning the full road. I had to dismount and squeeze by.

With the track and gap I'd assumed cycle through traffic was encouraged (they stopped cars doing so a few years ago). Perhaps no longer :(
The short barrier is back! The long one had taken a knock and was pushed outwards when I last went through (~3 weeks ago). I was glad I didn't have to practice my CX dismount again :p

It came up last week alright. Not sure if there was a dedicated thread or if it was in the Indian Pacific one or here. Donncha Cuttris is doing it.

There'll be a lot of goodwill toward it given the tragic death of Mike Hall

Oh, that's odd, it does, yet people on Twitter were flagging Sunday as velodrome in Smithfield… I think… never trust any statement of mine involving arithmetic…

was there a family friendly cycling event on today which would have passed down the side of the runway at dublin airport this morning?

I was driving up that way this morning and was stuck in traffic behind the group approaching the section to pull in to watch planes. Very large group moving at around 20kph so doubt it was a club spin.

yeah, we saw a few kids, possibly pre-teen, in the group.

I saw a white sign, I think on friday on or near the N11, I can't recall the words though but definitely sounded like it was for kids or slower adults (as it not club cyclists), like the equivalent of a community "fun run".

EDIT: Found this, don't think its related to the sign I saw, but likely what you guys saw
