Considering a move to the UK

I am considering moving to the UK to be with my boyfriend, he is living there already so rent isn't an issue as he owns his own place, how much money should I be looking to save up before I move over?

Would I be better waiting to apply for jobs when I arrive as I imagine it will be hard from here...

Bristol. I have known him for around 5 years and we have been dating seriously for over a year.

I work in the clerical/administrative field.

Not an answerable question really. My first thought was "Why does she have to save up anything; just come over with a couple of hundred and live with the boyfriend?"

If you could work out how much money you'd need if you were moving in with a boyfriend in Ireland it shouldn't be too hard to convert to GBP and we could tell you what is more/less expensive over here.

Bristol is great craic. come for pints with me! where abouts he is living?

plenty of jobs going in Bristol in your field. He could set you up for a National insurance number meeting before you fly over. can take upto 3 weeks.

Yaay for Bristol! Without hijacking the thread, how do you find Bristol? is there much Civil Engineering work there? I hope to be moving there early next year! :)

Yeah, the only recommendation I'd have (regardless of place, Bristol is nice though and plenty of work) but have a couple of hundred quid handy incase a) you need to get home at the drop of a hat and/or b) to cover a deposit on a place if you moved, rental wise.

Get the NI number sorted too before you move over, you can hit the ground running.

Construction is picking up a little bit. Nothing hugely major but you should get something.

Is this done by just applying in the locality you're going to be staying in?

I set up a profile on a recruitment agency website earlier this week to test the waters, and had 3 phonecalls that night relating to potential job offers! No shortage of work in Southern England from what I've heard! :)

You have to ring to apply for a number. they send you a letter to your address to confirm the meeting.

Need an UK address before you ring. google for more info.

No issue finding work in your field in Bristol. The place is booming. Job market is fluid. Don't like your job, you just get a new one. Get a low paid job then work for a few weeks and get a higher paying job.

How much money is a open ended question. If your saying with your boyfriend at the start then a grand or two in the bank will be grand.

Start applying for jobs straight away. Use your boyfriends address for the time been. Reed.Co. UK is a good place to start looking.

Hope you like festivals. From May to September there is one somewhere in the city every weekend.

Great to hear! :) How do you rate Bristol as a city to live in general? Much of a buzz about the place? Do you think the weather is generally better than Ireland?

Weather is much better to be fair. It is a good bit further south compared to most of Ireland. You don't get a week of grey drizzle like you would back home.

Good buzz about the place. If your bored here then it's your fault and not the cities is what I always say.

I'd rate it highly as a place to live. Lot of people moving out of London to live here, good pub, arts and music scene. Lots of history too. The country side is easy to reach if you feel like escaping.

Cheers mate, it certainly seems to tick a lot of boxes! :)

Is it relatively easy to nail down good accomodation? Do you know of anywhere that would be pretty reasonable to stay while trying to get set up? I've heard its a city on the rise and not heard many bad reports about there! Excited! :)
