Going end of October start of November. Like museums definitely want to do Anna frank don't know much about other ones. Kids love amusement parks. Boats ok as long as not too rocky!! Is there a bus tour around city? Probably stupid question but where would I go to see windmills? Would that be way out of city?

The Van gogh museum isn't very interesting, all his better stuff is another museum elsewhere in holland.

If you do one museum I recommend the Rijks museum.

Id recommend taking a tram to the Museumplein and going to the Bols experience, the Van Gough museum, and Rijksmuseum. I got fairly bored going around the Van Gough, but actually going in and seeing the Nights Watchman painting in the Rijksmuseum is something else. The thing is massive. I came out of the Bols Museum a little tipsy!

The Anne Frank is definitely worth seeing. I couldn't believe how big the hidden area where she stayed was! If your going for a smoke, stay away from the Grasshopper, its over priced. Anyone of the other coffee shops away from Dam Square are cheaper.

If your into a bit of clubbing Escape Nightclub is brilliant.

Also worth going to the Heineken Museum. The guys there giving you your free drink gave me and the missus a few as they said sure your irish you'll need it, gas lads.

Jump on a barge at Dam Square and get a tour, think it was only 7euro! Very cheap and you see a good chunk of the canals.

I love amsterdam, even the Architecture is unreal there.

Goes without saying you need to have a walk around the Redlight district! Its unreal.

Be sure to organise tickets for the Anne Frank house online & avoid the queues.

I'd take 'em to the Nemo Science Museum - lots of interactive exhibits & a cool roof garden to get a view of the city. If they're into action figures, Space Oddity on the Prinsengracht canal in the Jordaan is definitely worth a visit. You'll probably also find stuff of mutual interest in the 'nine streets' area not too far away - full of funky shops, cafes, vintage clothing, book & toy stores.

There's the Artis Zoo & a tropical indoor and outdoor pools complex called De Mirandabad about 10mins from the Rijksmuseum, with twisting slides & a wave machine. Kids will get a kick from renting bikes and being able to traverse the city safely and easily too.

Pathe de Munt is a good cinema right beside the flower market, if you feel like catching a movie in the evening.

Thanks all for all the ideas. Loads of things to see and do. Managed to get booking for Anna Frank house didn't realise it gets booked out.

One of my favorite places after the Anne Frank house was the Artis Royal Zoo. So much better than Dublin. Very nicely laid out and easy to navigate.

I also found Rembrandt's house great for kids because they had interaction with children. A woman who was showing how Rembrandt sculpted had the children around join in.

A walking tour or food tour can be fun. Sandemans do a free walking tour in the mornings a few times a week.

Enjoy. I loved Amsterdam, there is so much more to it than coffee shops and Red lights.:rolleyes:

If any of the teens saw the movie 'the fault in our stars', they may want to go and see a particular bench where the movie was filmed. :P When I went to Amsterdam on a school trip, a group of girls were determined to find it. they got there, and it turns out to be within walking distance of Anne Frank's house. Suggest it to them anyway. ;) besides that, Walking around and seeing all the architecture and canals is definitely worth it.

"€20 return flights to Amsterdam"?!! I am seething with jealousy!:o
I'm going in mid November for 2 nights but I haven't decided on my flights yet as between Dublin and Cork, Aer Lingus and Ryanair, there is a lot of choice to pick from.
Anyway, this thread has given me a lot of ideas so cheers for creating it:)
I have booked the Anne Frank house so looking forward to that. I guess I'll also add the Rijksmuseum and Heineken Experience to my itinerary, and the obligatory canal ride:)
I guess 48 hours isn't much for exploring Amsterdam but it's so expensive (accommodation-wise at least) that I can't afford an extra day there unfortunately.
