I have someone visiting from the states who wants to see some beautiful scenery in Tipperary. Something beyond the tourism brochures and well know landmarks. Any ideas welcome

Not Tipp but out around the Nire Valley and back into Clonmel by Powers the Pot is stunning

As long as the weather is reasonable the train journey across South Tipp from Limerick Junction to Waterford is quite scenic for the most part. Best views by sitting on the right of the carriage heading towards Waterford.

Could then spend a few hours around Waterford – the Viking Triangle and shops or the bus out to Dunmore East or Tramore. The schedule allows five hours in Waterford, Arrives in Waterford at 11.25 and returns at 16.25.

It’s €7 for the day return ticket from Clonmel into Waterford and would still be less than a tenner even from Cahir or Tipp town.

    Train timetable

Incidentally in the recent past several special trains have travelled the line with more to come and it appears there is a growing market for touring trains amongst tourists.

Hike or Drive to the top of Tountinna, fantastic panoramic view of North Tipperary, the River Shannon, Lough Derg and beyond.
While you are there make a visit to the Graves of the Leinstermen and take a short hike over to the Millennium Cross looking down on Portroe.

On Keeper Hill visit the Step viewing point between Toor and Silvermines, again more fantastic panoramic view of North Tipperary and beyond.
