Cracked Lens

    Hello All,

I recently dropped the nicest lens I've ever owned, a Nikon 70-200 f4 ED VR lens. The UV filter took most of the brunt of the fall but there is a small surface crack at the very outer edge of the front element, right next to the filter thread. Otherwise the lens is undamaged. The casing is ok, the vr is ok and the zoom function.

I have taken a few test shots at f22 and f4 and at 70mm and 200mm and I can not detect any loss of image quality. I'm thinking that it may because the crack is so small and it is so close to the outer edge of the front element. So I am wondering have I gotten away with it so to speak.

Has anyone out there had this experience? If so did they ever have problems further down the line with occasional unwanted refraction or visual aberations appearing in certain lighting conditions.

Also, does anyone know of any independent repairers (preferably in Dublin) who will repair Nikon lenses. The only ones I could find only repair Canon lenses and I've been told that Nikon will mug me for 100 euro just to look at it.

I would try to take a picture of any light source from different angles. If you can't see any difference then you are lucky :) I do repairs, but in you r case I say forget about repair. It's fully working and crack is not affecting image. It's easy to replace front lens group, but It's very hard to get it. And I think It will cost huge money.
