Personally I hate it because its a reminder that the real world still exists. Stick that stage and screen off in some commercialised area and I wouldn't care at all though. The position of it last year was dumb as **** though.

I say Noel Gallagher will get announced soon in a headliner slot (a la Blur last year) along with a trickle of tickets (mainly for 3 customers).

Lineups really not for me this year, I'd definitely be selling my ticket by now had I bought a loyalty ticket

To bring up an old conversation, I've watched the first six minutes of that boiler room set and apart from putting his headphones on and off he seems to do very little.

Does anyone else find it a bit odd that people go to watch this?

Again, I have no issue with the creation of the music in the studio. I'm just querying people's perception of such performances.

Well like Hopkins, Avery uses Kaoss pads, of course a lot of the music is pre-programmed in there but each time they play live they remix or have a sorta mixing desk or I'd say a virtual mixing desk so that they can constantly reinterpret the music they make. If that makes any sense at all, this is simply from observations of artists like, Hopkins, Holden, Aphex Twin, Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet and the guys from Moderat and Modeselektor.

That's the best explanation I've ever got on this subject. What do you mean when you say "reinterpret"?

That each version of their set is uniquely different, just listen to some of the Hopkins live recordings of tracks from Immunity, they are constantly morphing and changing all the time. They are the opposite of boring DJs such as Alesso, Calvin Harris, Fat Boy Slim and Dave Guetta who make it look like they are just putting on a CD as they spend most of the time clapping and egging the audience on, than looking at their monitors and tweaking the sound.

I see. Very interesting although I still can't quite get past the pre-recorded nature of the music.

the video posted is a DJ set, not a live set, he's just playing records. you don't go to "see" him do anything, you go to listen to the music. most people don't go to bands to see the guitarist strum chords, they go to hear music.

I wouldn't have the stats on why people go to see bands do but the word "see" in your sentence says a lot.

When I go to see a band I like to see the musicians perform. I like to see a drummer at work, if a guitarist is playing technical chords or leads then I like to see him/her in action and if the band includes a singer then I like to see them perform too. Obviously the sound goes with the visual performance. If the band stood there not playing their instruments then it'd get a zero out of ten from me.

You also say that "he's just playing records". I doubt that's true but that's sort of what I'm getting at. Would you pay generously to see someone play records? Would it matter if someone else played them?

Electronic music is a bit different than normal band music. For the most part, nobody really gives a shít what the performer does and are there purely for the music. If it's not for you or you don't get it then that's fine. But others do and enjoy it (immensely). Personally, I go to see DJs (or performers/artists that make their own music) that play the type of music I like. It doesn't really have much to do with the performer other than I know they play kicking tunes

well as someone who does it myself and has watched the video, i can tell you that it is true. he's playing other people's tracks and a few remixes of his own using 3 CDJs and a mixer.

bodhrandude was talking about a Daniel Avery live set presumably, in the video posted, he's just DJing with decks and a mixer, not using live equipment like controller pads, snyths, drum machines, etc.

in the video posted, he essentially is just "pressing play", although that's like saying a drummer is just "hitting things" or a pianist is "pressing keys", it may essentially be what it boils down to, but it takes skill and practice to actually make it work together. in the video he's selecting tracks with similar tempos and styles, making sure that they're lining up on the correct note and beats, mixing in the different low/mid/high frequencies at certain times so that it works properly together.
