I recently got a refurbished iphone 5s as replacement of my damaged iphone through my insurance. Is there any way I can check to see if this phone is unlocked or not without using a different sim card?

Try running the imei number on one of the status checker sites.

It will most likely be locked to the original network of your phone that was replaced.
