have been looking online for a cheaper quote but all the online engines require that you input your occupation - is this relevant as my occupation is not listed in their drop-down box.

Put in something reasonably close. The quote engines insist on an e-mail address and most of them want your mobile number so that they can harass call you to see if you want to go ahead with the policy so at that stage you can fine tune the occupation and see if it affects the quote.
