Felt more responsive than other 1.3 / 1.4 cars I've been in. Including my own Escort which is also supposed to be 75 bhp.

Ya I always felt they were decent for what they are much better in a saxo but obviously that's down to weight. Harping back to my younger days of hooliganism out of all the non performance 1.3/4 engines honda's d14 in 90bhp variant and toyota's 4efe were nearly always the fastest. Jdm 4efe starlets are little rockets 100bhp and a redline of 7200rpm in a shell that weighs very little is a good combo. Rover and suzuki made good performance orientated engines but the rovers were always too heavy, whereas the swift gti was the perfect combo of lightness and revyness.
Edit: nissans cg13de and ga14de deserve a mention too

the xsara is very comfortable though and it's quiet enough too. I got a 00 one in 2010 for a few hundred. went through an nct no bother. clutch release bearing shat itself and I sold it for what I bought it for.

Should be ok.. late 2003 models had the modifications done. Can always check the vin on one of the saab forums in the UK.

If it has had the right oil (fully synthetic 0w40) on interval, then it'll be grand either way. But as jharr says that year should be OK.

Might suit someone with more money than sense, because it is sillyness to be driving a 20mpg barge with a 4.3L engine, and a tax bill that exceeds the value of the car.

For €3500 you could buy that Lexus & a years tax.

Or you could alternatively buy a 1.4 petrol Golf & a years tax :o

To me, it makes more "sense" to drive a top spec luxury car than a miserybox.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,903 ✭✭✭cadaliac

Each to their own. But I can justify overpaying tax by €1,300 a year for 12 years and do 10,000 miles a year in sumptuous luxury vs. Buying a korean ****box for 25 grand and scrapping it in 2028. But each to their own as I say, there are advantages to all approaches.
    I agree with this.
I would much rather a luxobarge than a 1.6 diesel tin can too. Who wouldn't?
And, yes, each to their own. However.
My point was that the 430 wasn't all that cheap, considering the tax + running costs.
I wasn't knocking owning a nice older car with higher tax versus cheap tax boggo cheapskate car.
As you correctly pointed out, there are advantages to both sides. You just have to work out where you want to be and how much you want to spend.

€1809 is madness though in all fairness, no matter how nice the car is.

It's about a quarter of that to tax the same car in the uk

Its a €125,000 car to buy new. €1809 a year to drive something of that pedigree is not much.

As for the rights/wrongs of the motor tax system, thats a different discussion - If you are considering these cars one has to assume you are going to be compliant and pay the tax.

Grand I suppose if you are some old boy going up and down to the golf course and the shops. Not so great if you have to drive any distance on a regular basis. Feeding that 4.3L engine would cost a fortune, after the big tax bill your money would end up disappearing into the tank, very quickly too.

Well it's not just a commute for some people. Some people enjoy driving and better still if it's a car your happy to drive. The likes of that lexus for example is like a fine wine that some want to swirll around in their mouth before spitting it out. I wouldn't say no to a luxobarge at least once in my lifetime before these cars are slowly forced into permanent retirement due to bad motoring laws and keeping green .

it's the high tax that makes these cars affordable to buy in Ireland. They depreciate so much that plebs like us can afford to buy them cheap if you're willing to pay the tax.

Picked this up on Tuesday evening for €550.

NCT valid until August. Very good spec for its age and very clean. I was going to buy 04/05 but the price of this won me over.

    387718.png

Edit: just to add, it also came with a good 1/2 tank of fuel in it.

Edit: Sorry, I'm still in work and half asleep. It's been a long week. It's a Honda Accord 1.8 SE Executive with 85k miles on the clock. Plenty of mod cons, A/C, heated front seats, 4 electric windows, electric driver's seat, sunroof, cruise control, Bose stereo (the seller seemed to think this was the most important selling point!).

There is minor damage to the rear bumper but fixable easily enough. I nearly set the clutch on fire on the test drive having never driven a Honda of its vintage before. That was excruciatingly embarrassing so I kind of had to buy it at that stage, even though I'd already decided on it!

You won bangernomics of the year!! Looks great, interior shot?

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

    Well wear, great buy :)

What was so different driving a Honda "of that vintage"? Did it not have the usual 3 pedals on the floor and a gear stick to your left? :p

:D Thanks! It is a fine looking car and everything seems perfect mechanically. Even the electronics are all a-ok!

I'll try and get some of the interior tomorrow and post them. It looks and feels very fresh considering it's age but I suppose an average of 6k miles a year inside it will do that.

Haha! :) I suppose it could still be the same with Hondas and I would know but the clutch is an on/off switch, which I'm reliably informed was common if not universal in Hondas that age. The bite point is also very late, so it will take some getting used to.

You should be able to adjust the bite point, even on hydraulic clutches.

The Other half's all fella had one a while ago and his clutch was exactly the same, if your used to a clutch with a low enough biting point, then the accord nearly feels like its clutch is slipping.

Automatic 2.0T S80 with 16 months (10/17) NCT for €1150, undoubtedly €1k if you waved the cash in front of the seller.

At €1900 we're just at the top of the bangernomics budget, but nevertheless this (surprisingly) tidy looking diesel Sonata has NCT until 2018 for less than two grand. To me this is good value for a rather respectable family car.

Nice looking LS430 with test to 3/17 and a bit of tax. Asking 1750...I wonder if 1500 would be a bit too cheeky..

I've been looking for one of these to use as my new winter beater, here in the US that LS430 would be $7K
