Partner has run a 98 Micra for the past 4 years, timing chain replaced and front cross member under the radiator rusted common fault, other then that runs like a clock

Ay they're a nailer of a car so reliable, easy to maintain also and not half as bad to rust as some of the competition from the same era. K11 micras along with starlets would be my two recommendations for first time cars but first time insurance is a big issue for both which is a shame.

not half as bad to rust as some of the competition from the same era.

But worse to rust than most of its rivals, sure some other cars are worse, but Micras are particularly bad to rust. My wife's 2 micras were rotten underneath.

Never really found them too bad to be honest they're direct competition to corsa b's and mk4 fiesta's both of which are way worse to rust. Saxo's and 106's rust a nice bit aswell. Starlets and yaris' dont have bad rust problems but it's hard find one of them for €350 with tax and test. I'd be of the opinion that the number of k11 micras still on the roads today should be testement to they're build quality.

Volvo 460 OAP special NCT 4/17 €550....very tempting

    He has it down as a 1.6....its a 1.8
insurance companys are salavating at the thoughts of just how much they can charge/dip on this

At 20 years old, its probably over the hump , and should now be getting into classic insurance territory.

Not sure if that works if its your only car though...

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,685 ✭✭✭flutered

    A Kim Kardashian car.
with its running costs it would need a high income owner to mantain it

€3805 for that?? Christ if you paid me that I still don't think I'd drive it.

Those cubes are all in and around that mark last time I checked, don't think you'd get it for bangernomics cash.

There's no 1.3 though if I'm right, they're commonly a 1.5, there was a 1.4 option but didn't think they were in the cube3 model.

I would love one though, swanky JDM with a difference, rip the seats out and it'll take a couple of mountain bikes.

I think it was Duke who had the older Z10 model here?

Evening lads, just started a thread here as I think I'm more than likely in the market for a new car. Keeping the criteria really simple I'm looking for €1500 or less, 2004 and up, diesel and hopefully 710 tax or less, something oddball. More details in thread but I would love to see what you can come up with:D:D

    Cheers.

'03 318ci cabriolet - NCT 1/17 €1850 - would want to know what "tidying" it needs but has the potential to be a nice sub €2k car for the summer

A couple of years older but I think I would be more inclined to go for this 6 cylinder example with NCT 5/17 for €1700

Well, 13 months on, and I still have the Stilo. Bought for €750 last June ( so already €50 up as I sold the previous car for €800) and still going well.

    So far it has had:
2 oil services (done just over 12k kms)
    Rear axle bushes €100 fitted
new battery ( wasnt actually needed, problem was ecu)
replacement fuse box under bonnet ( €20 from scrappy)
replacement expansion tank and new coolant (€10 for s/h tank, €10 for coolant)

    Failed NCT in January needing:
    Tyres €140
    Wishbone €35
    emissions €10 ( injector cleaner)

    Passed 2nd try,with ticket until January 2017

Car has been great mechanically, with engine, gearbox and other mechanicals being fault free. Had a recurring cutting out issue which I could not diagnose definitively but went away when I swapped out the fusebox. I also cleaned the internals of the ecu, which had some bridged terminals due to run off from contact cleaner. Small pinhole leak in coolant tank fixed.

Still drives and looks well, so I'm going to hang on to it. Its been a very cheap car for me to run, but I've done all the work myself ( except rear bushes). Surprisingly quick, its a car that likes to be pressed on a bit. I find myself taking it on longer trips instead of the Alfa 159.

    Perfect Bangernomics

Nice one @2600 Elephants. I still quite like the look of those Stilos' and particularly as a three door.

I'm Tipo is up for an NCT this month so I'm going to start adding up all of the costs over the last six months. It hasn't wanted for anything mind..

    Test till 4/17
    Tax till end of August
    Solid 2.3 150bhp engine
    (that will put most off)
    €600
€400 or less I'd aim for, very small market for such a car but it'd ferry kids till mid next year for a very small outlay.

    Aren't they dog slow?
But cheap it is and would take you in comfort easily.

Not sure never driven one but they're a good engine and the acceleration specs are close to the 130bhp tdi version which is grand for everyday travelling. Certainly won't be the slowest car on the road.
