    I rang to chance if this would be allowed on a classic policy. It wouldn't :p

    Whats the rules for classic insurance and tax?

    For tax it needs to be 30.
    For insurance it varies - but usually 20 years upwards, or deemed to be a collectable model of younger vintage. Typically specialist stuff or high performance cars. You normally have to have a separately insured daily driver, and you need to be 25 or older.

    Fairly straight looking B5 passat with decent test.
    Asking €300 but it's been up a few days so €200-€250 should lift it.

    I have a 16 year old BMW 318i saloon on classic insurance. Not collectable by any standard. Not specialist and certainly not high performance. And I do NOT have a separately insured daily driver...

    I am over 25 though :p

    Well - the norm for classic insurance is a separate daily driver (far more insured in that category than sole drivers), and, for whatever reason - BMW's, Mercs, and Porsches of whatever shade, seem to qualify for 'collectable' status, as far as insurers are concerned. If you tried to get classic insurance on a 16 year old Fiat Bravo, I suspect you'd get short shrift - even if the Bravo may well be more collectable than a 318. The dividing line between 'youngtimer classics' and 'bangers', as far as insurers are concerned, seems to be mostly down to badge snobbery.

    Funny that you mention the "fancy" marques, I tried to get a classic quote off first ireland on a 1990 merc 190 today and they told me it was "mass produced" so they don't do it, :rolleyes:

    I told them to shove it up their collective arse alongside the model t ford and went to axa who offered a nice cheap quote.

    Who is "they"?

    I bet it wasn't First Ireland. Like alastair, I believe anything German of any prestige brand (Audi, BMW, Porsche in my personal experience - and I doubt it would be different for Mercedes) and they are easily convinced with some sweet talk that they will need to give you a classic policy :D

    Lying am i??? It was first ireland.. or rather their rep on the phone. I said that was an outrageous statement and he repeated that mass produced cars cant be classics. Hence the arse shove & end of call.

    Ah I won't get into it too much in this thread (best one on boards apart from guess the car) but I was not met with charm from the get go so didn't reciprocate.

    Anywho, back to bangers!

    First E90 BMW in here I believe! Always nice to get a car that still looks fresh for just bangernomics money. This car would probably set you back €6k - €7k on the continent.

    BMW 320i, 2005. Ad says NCT until July 2016, but in fact it is valid until May 19th, 2017! Original Irish car, 3 owners (not 2 like the ad says)

    Linky

    Asking €2,300 but surely he needs to sell quickly and he won't refuse 2 grand in cash about to go into his hand :cool:

    Well now! If you were to go for this what kind of problems would you be looking out for? Very tempting.

    Linky

    First with short NCT, second with NCT almost until 2018

    Both with the 1.9 petrol which has a timing chain and seeing we are talking Alfas here, this is the best engine from a bangernomics point of view :p

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,152 ✭✭✭26000 Elephants

    I'll wager the red one is due a few suspension arms for NCT, so budget 400e. Rear window reg is about 80e, 20 minutes to fit. Make sure you seal the plastic liner with silicone before you put door card back on, or you will have soggy carpets.

    Looks super. Makes that 3 series look a right minger.

    very odd, as I have run several older Mercs over the last 10 years, including most recently a 190 (1992) as classics through First Ireland. In each case they were a "2nd car" and not the principal driver. Well at least you got sorted with another co.

    obligatory banger:

    2000 Avensis, NCT til Aug 17, allegedly 1 owner.
    Seller is a dealer, all yours for €1k

    Posting in the dreamers thread got me looking at Rovers, I think a few belong in this thread. All 2.0 diesels with NCT.

    04 Automatic for €1500:
    MTI5YTM5YmUwYjRmZjhhODVhZmE1ZjdlMmE0NmI2ZDbPseOMIe-6Qtzr6Gh4_pYnaHR0cDovL3MzLWV1LXdlc3QtMS5hbWF6b25hd3MuY29tL2RvbmVkZWFsLmllLXBob3Rvcy9waG90b181OTI1MDIwOHx8fDYwMHg2MDB8fHx8fHx8fA==.jpeg

    and an 05 for €800:

    YWNhMGM5MGQxOWU4ZDBiYTE0NmUyNzhmMjZkZjVjYza6eLJZg8-36q9gF3xyiEFOaHR0cDovL3MzLWV1LXdlc3QtMS5hbWF6b25hd3MuY29tL2RvbmVkZWFsLmllLXBob3Rvcy9waG90b181OTIzNTU5Mnx8fDYwMHg2MDB8fHx8fHx8fA==.jpeg

    and a pre-facelift 04 for €750:

    OGNkYjU2MjRiZmExY2YxNGM5YjAyNTNiZDNiOWM2OThORnVewm2G2vOPCMDabf2KaHR0cDovL3MzLWV1LXdlc3QtMS5hbWF6b25hd3MuY29tL2RvbmVkZWFsLmllLXBob3Rvcy9waG90b181OTAzODAwMnx8fDYwMHg2MDB8fHx8fHx8fA==.jpeg

    FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

    You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

    Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles to avoid the DRS fee.

    Love the rovers.

    An 05 diesel with reasonable miles for under €1k is a bargain imo.

    I buy the odd petrol one and like tidying them up. Buying at 400 or so for late model and letting them off again for little over a grand.

    Solid option given the current insurance climate.

    One for Saab fans, 06 95 petrol estate with full service history & NCT until 03/17, asking €1450.

    I just posted this in the fixer upper thread but it should be mentioned here too.

    Walter the CLK sold just now. Nice chap who lives fairly local. Hope it's as good to him as it was to us. :)

    We gave €875 for the car in 2013 with a years test. 30,000 miles (almost to the mile!) we sold it for €300. Only none service items it ever needed was one coil pack and a radiator. I think it's fair to say it can't be done for less. Walter will be missed

    In a similar vain. A sad sad day for the parish and a nice bargain for the new owner.

    "First to see, bought" as the cliche goes.

    A very nice fella from far enough away that hopefully I never see it again.

    A final farewell photo. It was good, it was bad, it was real and I will look back fondly :)

    Love the look of the CLK, Zebra! What was it like that is sold for just €300? I guess no NCT, anything wrong with it? CLK200? What spec? Presumably it wasn't a manual?
