Any recommendations on a good value saloon or decently sized hatchback?

Currently have a 2004 1.6 Mitsubishi Lancer, would probably only get maybe €1300 for it. Goes grand but brakes need to be done which is about €200

Don't mind going up to max 2.0 litre and €2000, prefer petrol.

I get the feeling you're after an upgrade judging by your post. If so this would fit the bill it looks clean should have good spec. By the NCT disc it looks to have near 300,000km (can't zoom in on the phone so open to correction) but in miles that's not too bad really around 180k.
Tested till the end of sept17 and taxed till the end of sept16.
    Asking €1250

    Looks nice.

An upgrade could be nice, but better the devil you know sometimes, who knows what needs to be fixed on that!

I think ill just get the brakes fixed on the Lancer and get another while out of it

Yep I'd always advocate holding on to a car if that's an option.
Re: the ford it's as low risk a used car you could buy off dd.
simple petrol engine no known electrical faults with that model either also a massive NCT so as long as it passed a basic inspection and road test it'd be hard go wrong.
But if the lancer is serving you well no real need to change.

It hasnt been tested yet, but I'd say you are right. Might make sense as a fixeruppper if it is tidy, but otherwise the short nct makes it too risky for bangernomics.

    It's 600 quid.

It's cheap, you have a point. But the car could be worth less than €100 if it fails the NCT. Fairly big risk there, Mervyn!

I went to see this and it's pretty rough - my girlfriend didn't feel safe in the car and I think it needs a fair bit of work - gearbox service, brakes were terrible, dents and scratches everywhere, bad oil leak, exhaust fumes in the cabin - definitely a "fixerupper" thread candidate. Seller was a decent bloke though.

The "in perfect driving order" was a bit of exaggeration :D

Surely negotiable to 2K.... currently €2350.

A lot of car for the money there in fairness.

You'd be shocked how small the IS200 is...

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,945 ✭✭✭selectamatic

Manual Is200's are all 6 speed as far as I know. Doesn't make them good on juice though :P they're very sore on petrol on short journeys not too bad on longer ones but still thirsty enough. Nice cars though.
With it being an estate it'll help keep it off the shlab ;)

Yeah I need a big old boot so if it's small it's a non runner.

C5 and E-class Mercedes estates of that era have indeed the biggest boots of them all
