Few things more expensive than a cheap BMW lads. E39's, E46's are all at that age and budget where they just inhale money (the E39's at least anyway).

Are you trolling now? I've had several E46s some with very high mileages and there wasn't much wrong with them. Bought all of them for well under €1k, all taxed and all with a very long NCT.

And if any of them had calved on me, I would have just dumped it and moved on. The one thing that just isn't bangernomics is to buy a car and let it inhale your money...

Let's be fair, the lad has owned a 525i and a 750i and they've both needed expensive repairs, which he's paid for. With that in mind, I think his comments are justified.

Sure there's been plenty of owners on here who had petrol E46's and they were a well documented nightmare.

I admit there's good and bad, sure poster on here bought a bangernomics Alfa 156 for his commute. 9000 miles in and all he has done was an oil change and an auxiliary belt. Doesn't change the fact that most Alfa 156's do go wrong at some stage!

Also my point was more directed at the E39 anyway, still wouldn't touch a sub €2k 46/39.

LOL, masochists will be masochists :pac:

@166man - if you wouldn't touch a bangernomics E46 (sub €2k is the definition of bangernomics), than maybe you shouldn't be buying any bangernomics cars at all. Or stick to bombproof simple cars like Mazda 626, Toyota Corolla, etc.

    I'd echoe the above.
With regards an e46 320d a side from normal servicing all that needs special attention is change the turbo filter/vortex and check/blank off swirl flaps.

The m47 is/was just about as reliable as any other diesel from the noughties era apart from the swirl flaps issue which by now is well documented and an easy fix.

That particular one I linked above since it's most likely an early facelift 5 speed also probably has the older single flap design which doesn't fail at all unlike the ones that are fitted to 03-05 six speed variants.
Suspension and sensors are nothing too complex either.

Now that said it could be a pile of sh1te but thats the nature of bangernomics.

However 2 owners from new, 180k miles on the clock, a long nct, a steady sounding buck selling it and asking €975 id fancy the chances of it being closer to bargain than lemon.

I think those phones are rotten looking. Now in the E38 that's an easy fix, just replace the armrest. Although it will probably be hard to find one in that colour green. Maybe a US breaker or eBay obviously

I'm glad the phone in my S-type is hidden under the armrest...

I agree it isnt aesthetically great looking that phone.
It is just the idea that i like.

Suits a car like that better than some 6 inch smartphone stuck to the windscreen.

11 months NCT. Very cheap to run, very reliable. Bangernomics it is. I really like these, might get one in the new year.

Does the A2 have a DPF. Would be a nice car for the missus but mainly for town driving. Nice car.

That was originally one of our cars from 2007 - 2011. Sold Jan 2011 with 81,534 km's.

Unfortunately, all detail is on our old system so I can't see what sort of history it had.

    Get a petrol.

A2 diesel is an ideal car for someone who does a high mileage but needs to keep their fuel bill to an absolute minimum

A2 petrol is a very good short trips car because it is light, so all start stop traffic doesn't waste more fuel than necessary. Alternatively for a lot of start stop traffic in bangernomics budget, buy a petrol hybrid like a Prius

No DPF on this model. Been running one for a few years now - mix of mostly city driving and regular motorway trips. No problems at all. The later 'red i' A2 TDi's do have a DPF.

Can you get a decent one for bangernomics money? I'm on the lookout for a well looked after prius at the right money. I was very tempted by your 5-Series but I've managed to talk myself out of that :).

A Prius? I've seen them posted here alright, but I know very little about them. But some people here no doubt do!

Pri are brilliant... Simple in the majority of things and reliable - you'll service it yourself without any hassle.

I'm hearing nothing but good things about them - particularly from around these parts. I'm after a 2nd car for the wife and I value reliability above all. Also like the idea having an auto.
