€1124 VRT rebate on that merc...

Crazy stuff! Has anyone in here actually gone through the process of buying a car and then exporting it and getting more VRT rebate than they spent on the car?

Wouldn't be something I'd be interested in, but it's an interesting thought...

Sure, but recent NCT so I doubt there's anything structurally wrong. I'd drive it. Put a few months tax on it, add it to my classic insurance for €100 for a full year (fully comp) and you'll drive a luxury car for peanuts

What is the tax on a classic car? Is it a reduced rate?

Would pushing it off the end of Howth harbour be classed as"exporting"? ;)

Classic car motor tax is €56 per year. Only for cars over 30 years old though!

We (me and my father) bought a 2006 VW Eos 2.0 TFSI (200hp) from a breakers back in February. Paid €1800 for it as it had a broken roof. Put around €1000 of parts into fixing the roof, then got a rebate of €1900 from Revenue once exported. So an effective cost of €900. It now resides in Southern France and sure beats renting a car every week during the summer! We have just bought our third Eos now, again with a broken roof. Love them, as middle aged blonde as the appearance may be.

If you could stomach the tax, would this be something worth looking at?

A 97 Punto convertible costing more than a 2002 V6 4x4 Jag, what a time to be alive!

NCT is 01/18. Unfortunate it's a manual. But get a couple of hundred off and it's a lot of car for the money. 4WD is useful, because winter is coming :)

'05 E-Class V6 petrol. One of the most comfortable cars you could own for bangernomics money and not max tax

Pre-facelift model, so not the superior reliability of the facelift, but a lot of value, yours surely for €2k cash. NCT till 02/17 which is a bit short...

Hmm, not my cup of tea at all (that said I had a look at a 1.5 daysul one last week..): ) but if you're looking for an A to B car that won't cost you an arm and a leg and a first born to insure and generally run, you can't go too far wrong for €1600 with NCT to 5/18.

Jaysus. €400 would take that Golf.

    And it's not an SDI!

Colour coded handles suggests it's relatively decent spec.
4 original wheel trims is always a good omen too.

Harder get an sdi for sub €800 than a tdi for some strange reason.

It certainly has an air of a genuine car about it though and the tralee tax disc holder is a good sign too. The wastegated turbos are as reliable as can be as well. No sticky vanes or dodgy n75 valves to deal with.

Clean looking 2003 Focus Ghia saloon. Long term owner, lots of work done.

850 euros, could be had for less.

Please share your negotiation tactics, I've never gotten more than a token few quid knocked off the asking :pac:

The guy is desperately trying to sell must be stuck for cash or really wants to offload as its a lemon.

Hard to know unless checking it over of course.

    NCT 03/18 is genuine too.

    Do you think? Ad says:

"price is €850 NO OFFERS --- NO OFFERS"

    Somehow I can't see him accepting €500 ;)

Of course. "No offers" usually means offers over the phone. In person its a different thing. Strike up a rapport and make your offer. I reckon that car is worth the asking all day long ( undeclared faults notwithstanding) so no need to go to 500. I'd be starting at 700, hope to pay no more than 750.

Isn't there a 500 euro fee to just begin with to export a car.

It used to be €500, it's now €100.
