Currently in NZ bought a 99 1.6 Golf with 158000km needs a timing belt soon along with a few more bits, multiple mechanics (indo & indo at car fair) told me I got a good deal at 3000$ so 2000e, so many older cars here are far higher in price but bigger engines, low tax and optional insurance. It's a far cry from home

    Daylight robbery a 1999 1.6 golf 2k.

Non pd? I know very little about diesel engines and even less about VAG diesels, but I thought all the VAG turbo diesel engines of that era had been pd for years and they switched to common rail a few years later?

VW and audi went all pd around about 01 but skoda and seat continued to use some of the older non pd engines in certain trim levels I think it was kinda like a surplus of left overs similar to how the mk1 octavia could be got up to 09.

Easy way to know is if it's 90bhp or 110bhp it's non pd. The 90bhp has an old school wastegated turbo where as the 110bhp has a vnt turbo but still retained the old style injection system.

100bhp 115bhp 130bhp and 150bhp were the early pd's. Think the 115bhp in the b5 Passat marked the intro of pd tdi's.

05 E60 automatic with leather and NCT to 2018 for €1750. Cheap for "premium" motoring

I don't need a car, I REALLY don't, but what's the story with these? I can see myself buying one of these or a 520d in a few years when their price drops. Mechanic won't let me go near a beemer because of the servicing/parts cost.

Standard NZ price. I paid 4k for a 1993 2.2 legacy in NZ in 2013 and that was a steal.

Tax is nothing, $70 if I remember right.
    Insurance? What's insurance...

    Cheap fuel costs.

The WOF (NCT) is $25 and it's not total bullshìt like the NCT is here.

It's a fantastic place to be a motorist.

The cars are expensive but you save everywhere else.

I was and still slightly am in this position as well except i was told not to return to my mechanic if i did buy one :D Which I was quite surprised by as I was under the impression that straight 6 petrols were reliable.

There are a lot of spurious parts for these around now so the cost of parts isnt meant to be as bad and you think.

As backed up by other poster, it's quite decent here, cars hold value much more given the lower running costs.

Additionally imports are huge here, mine howevver is NZ made or "NZ new" as they say, it's also manual which is unusual.
I would say there are less manuals in Auckland than automatics in Dublin. Manual is more expensive in general so it's decent.
Should still get 2500$ even without timing belt done.

Compare how? Your 2.5 engine in your older model 5-series is more powerful than the same 2.2 engine in the newer model, a very competent and well made car, but it is heavier than yours and nowhere near as good as a drivers car. Still both have that classic BMW straight six smoothness and refinement

The newer model is only a 4 pot. The first ever BMW 520i with only a 4 pot. Nothing wrong with it, but it's not a straight 6. Fuel consumption will be a lot less as this is a modern efficient direct injection as opposed to the old skool 6-pot. I doubt it will be as indestructible and reliable though. How could it be?

Also tax will only be €710 (2l as opposed to €951 for the 2.2l and €1080 for your 2.5l). (@Soarer - the first 3 letters indicate the engine model, the number after the letter B means the capacity of the engine, so B25 means a 2.5l engine). On the new regime tax will go further down to €570 for both auto and manual

Very few post '08 petrols for sale though...

E39: BMW 5-series model number (3 generations ago)
    E60: BMW 5-series model number (2 generations ago) - Sedan / Saloon
    E61: BMW 5-series model number (2 generations ago) - Touring / Stationwagon

M54: straight six cylinder petrol engine from the early 00s
N43: straight four cylinder petrol engine from the late 00s

B22: number after the B indicates how many litres the capacity of the engine is. 22 indicates 2.2l

    That better? :)

    Direct translation:
How does the older 6 cylinder 2.2L engine compare with the newer 4 cyclinder 2.0L in the 5th generation 520i? I'm currently driving a 4th generation 525i and considering a move to the 5th generation (either saloon or maybe even estate).

I'm asking because I was wondering about things like running costs (as Unkel pointed out, both fuel and tax would be lower), reliability (the 6 cyclinders are a known entity) and driveability.
