But would you be bothered going to Donegal to pick it up (and risk wasting a journey that would take the guts of a day and cost quite a bit of money?)

Very, very limited market for that car. And I'd be interested to know why he is selling after 22 years :p

I suspect it's being sold after 22 years because the owner has passed away.

Look at the other ads the seller has, it's for old household ornaments.........Grandpa Collins has passed away and now Frank Collins sells the Grandpas Honda and the household ornaments.

    Glad we resolved that!

NCT till 1/18 for €400. These will be sought after in a few years I think

Agree re desirability, always thought they were one of the most beautifully designed coupes of the last 15-20 years.
What's with the front seats though? The passenger looks to be pleather, the drivers seems to be original (velour?)

It's just a seat cover that wasn't taken off for the pics.

They look like they have a child so it would protect spills, (you can de-activate the passenger airbag), which would lead you to believe it's a looked after car.

Looks like a cover on the passenger seat

Something a bit newer than the above. Diesel, with nav which is always a nice thing to have imo..if it works. NCT to 9/17 for €1500. Certainly looks a lot more expensive than it actually is

This is my car, I was curious if someone would post it. I didn't want to myself. Any questions just shout.

Car really is in great nick. I've done the DPF (decored 4 years ago and passed 2 NCTs)

Clutch and Dual mass flywheel replaced.

    Moving abroad sale.

I have seen this one in the flesh and its very clean. 1.1K for a 2004 is value even with a short NCT.

Nice mileage, clean car, and NCT April. Fair price too.

Need to haggle a bit to fit in here but for 2450 along with the tax we come close .
Few marks on bumper the reason to get price down, along with highish miles.

330,000km. Almost literally the distance to the moon from earth....

Can do tomorrow. They're black fabric seats. No meaningful bolster wear strangely. Mainly long drives I suppose.

    I've added two more pics.

What brand and model are the tyres and how is the body work ? Cheers

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 193 ✭✭MrRolex

For me, high mileage plus high tax; is a no.
Best of luck with the sale though. No offence implied.
I have seen ex-taxi's sell with over 300K on the clock so there is a market for high mileage cars.

Body work is good but there are one or two small scuffs.

Tyres are Contentinal 205/55/16 with 80% thread. Standard unmarked alloys.

Easy to go wrong. I like the tan leather seats but the NCT on that car expired almost a year ago. Not bangernomics.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 193 ✭✭MrRolex

Front wishbones and droplinks made of chocolate.
300 to buy, then at least 300 to get it through an NCT if one is lucky.
The 156 is well known in the car trade as a lemon.
Some sound advice from Kelly Clarkson on this one:

I have one of these as my daily.
199 Euro motor tax per year, 40 MPG, cheap insurance. What is there not to like?
Mine is a rare one previous owner car though; owned by a 70 year old that never got it past third gear running to mass. So its only run in now after 17 years.
NCT until May on this one. Cheap motoring at only 450 Euro.
Even has GTI front foglights, alloys, and rear badge to satisfy the 17 year old's target market.
A learner drivers wet dream. Imagine the thrill of the 50 BHP 1.0 MPI, breathtaking.
I just turned one over on Donedeal within 48 hours of putting the ad up. Nice easy 250 Euro profit for running it through a car wash and hoovering it.

You'd think I'd have learned to read by now. Even looked at the NCT site

At the risk of going "fixerupper" : wishbones (TRW) €85 delivered for both, 2 hours on the driveway to replace with basic tools :)
(Happy €800 bangernomics 156sw driver since last May, no major non-service item issues!)

Fair play to you. At the end of the day, if driving a 156 makes you feel happy, then more power to you. Never let what others think of your car influence your decision to own one. I drive a Polo 1.0 as my daily, and get mocked for it.
But over the years I have owned everything from a Bentley to AMG's.
The thing is, there is a lot to be said for 199 Euro motor tax, and 40 MPG these days.
At 40 years old my days of paying 1809 Euro motor tax for 15 MPG cars are over.
The truth is, a man can get some pleasure from driving a cheap 156 that costs him only 800 Euro. Its all about bang for buck.
As slow as it is, I like driving my 50 BHP Polo that cost me 400 Euro.

What d'yiz reckon about this? Anything to watch for? I'm in the market for a sub E800 motor. Preferably 03 or up for insurance.

Got my new bangernomics motor today in the end up. Picked up an '06 petrol 407 from a local dealer for €1400. It's a bit more expensive than what I had seen on Donedeal and the likes, but there was a bit of desperation in the end. The test is up in a few weeks but he booked it in when I picked it up for next week and is going to pay for the test and carry out any work they identify needing done. 3 month engine and gearbox warranty too FWIW.

Here's hoping I can knock a year or two out of it.

Megane's are unreliable, bad electrics (window regulators, central locking, immobilisers, etc).
For 800 Euro you would be better with a MK4 Golf 1.9 TDI.
Better build quality, more reliable, and higher resale value when you are done with it.
800 will get you an '03 one with reasonable mileage and NCT.
Megane v Golf? No contest. Trust me.
This is the kind of thing you should be looking for 800 on an '03. 200K on a 1.9 TDI engine is nothing, they can do 300K no problem.

It's printed on the invoice he gave me that he would see it through the test so should be golden. He's a SIMI guy so I'd say he'll be grand in that regard.

I wish you the best of luck with it. The 1.8 petrol is OK, but thirsty. At least you wont have any of the 1.6 HDI DPF woes, that is a real dog of a car. I think the 2.0 HDI is the best one of the 407 range. The way I see it is this, if one is weighing up 636 tax on a 1.8, one may as well go for the 2.0 and pay 710; for the diesel economy. Having said that, the 1.8 will do you if you don't do many miles. A years NCT is fair enough as he was getting top money for an '06 at that price. Hard to sell a petrol 407 when the diesels are favoured.
