    Old skool engine and very reliable. So an excellent choice for a bangernomics car imho

    I would assume it has the MK3 1.6

    99% of MK3's here have 1.4 or 1.9 SDI

    Loads of Mk4s here came with the 8v 1.6 up top 2001 then they introduced the 16v

    Will need proof clutch and DMF were done and recent enough belt, but if so, good value mile munching econorattlebox.

    Hoping to take a look at this over the weekend.
    Knee deep in a self build and my little Merc is feeling the pressure.
    Hoping to park it for 6/12 months and get myself a lugger.

    '05 Passat Estate 1.9
    Test Feb '18
    Reasonable.miles and looks honest.
    Asking €1,150

    Anything I need to watch out for on these cars?

    Clutch and DMF is a pricey fix, make sure the timing belt isnt due, front suspension ..
    Otherwise its just niggly stuff, window regulators, door locks, that kind of thing..

    Seized alternator pulley is another one to look out for, it can throw the serpentine belt. It's a noisy squeaking from the front of the engine, not very expensive to fix if done by an indy with half a brain.

    They can lock you out, it's a glitch on some of them, especially if the key is in the ignition. Either have a spare handy, or get a key and tape it inside the rear bumper.

    Absolutely, happened me too.. I had to ring Aviva rescue to break in..

    I had 2 over the years and I was constantly fixing tiny niggles. Since I got an Avensis (2005) 2 years ago I have literally had nothing go wrong.
    Boot lock, rear washers, eating front tyres. buttons disintegrating on dash .. Mostly small stuff but very annoying.

    They sound a bit niggly. I though they were kind of bullet proof for some.reason.!

    1996 Carina petrol with a years NCT for €700, Bangernomics at it's best.

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/toyota-carina/14255342

    ZmZmYzJlMjZhMzU5MTcwNjAwMTI4NGQzZTBiYTIxYjNvHLe6EfTIm49Mb8ge6OxRaHR0cDovL3MzLWV1LXdlc3QtMS5hbWF6b25hd3MuY29tL2RvbmVkZWFsLmllLXBob3Rvcy9waG90b182NjU5ODM0MHx8fDYwMHg2MDB8fHx8fHx8fA==.jpeg

    This should go in the classics section. It's over budget, will haggle close to €2,000 as there'll be few takers, but it's worth a mention for old times sake. Add in €120 for a top professional valet and it's good to go. I like it.

    Carina E Gti. NCT 02/18. €2,400.

    Cheap old school diesel Avensis for €500:

    Slow as a wet week but those old TD engines are very durable, simple mechanics. Needs a bit of tidying up and has a short enough NCT but could be very cheap motoring for someone if it takes small money to get it through the NCT for another year.

    They're not that slow to be fair. Faster than most older D-4Ds are at this stage! They're also much quieter and far less likely to be problematic.
    That's a Luna as well so would have aircon. The alloys have gone walkies though. Has the spoiler for downforce too.

    These weren't that slow tbh, they were lively enough for a td of the era and much better than the likes of a td primera but cracked cylinder heads was an issue on some of them(probably changed at this stage anyway)

    I know its an old cliche but that Avensis is hardly ran in with those miles.

    As far as I know they needed to get a serious reddening to crack the head. It was an issue that was much more prevalent in the 2.2td previas as their cooling systems were inadequate for their midship style engine layout

    Buy that, and use it for scrappage against something else. WS gonna say the new Leaf towards year's end, but maybe not in this forum!

    Basically €4,000 for €100.

    The engine if that's what you mean Duke maybe (I would say its well run in though). But I think this is a phrase which just like "mint condition" is used away too loosely. At that mileage its hardly all that "tight" anymore unless many steering; suspension and brake components were changed in recent years so think it would be incorrect to say its hardly ran in.

    My contribution;

    2002 VW Bora 1.9 TDI;
    177k miles;
    NCT'd until June 2017;
    Asking €950

    I had a 98 to Avensis lift back which I think looks better than the saloon.
    I clocked up over 250k miles on it and the only thing that broke on it was the head gasket. Rad weld it and never gave anymore trouble.
    Great car.
