    Going up to see this in an hour so

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/ford-focus-lx-1-4-nct-09-16-695/11069552

    Apparently the key won't open either front doors now because he locked the passenger door by accident, so I have to get in through the boot!

    He says I should get a basic key from Ford for about €15 and the existing key will do for the ignition.

    That car looks rough imo. For not much more you could do a lot better tbh.

    There are a few factors involved;

    I want a Focus because I have one that won't be going through the NCT so I'll be parking the old one up for a few months and if needs be use it for parts.

    I'm under serious time pressure and this evening is the only day for a while I can actually sort this, I've no roadworthy car otherwise, which I need for creche runs and the like.

    Due to the above I can only go for Dublin ads that I can actually get to.

    You are seriously going to go and look at at car where you need to get in through the boot?

    Desperate times! I went and had a look anyway and it was a no almost from the get go, the engine sounded much more strained than my own Focus and the steering would drift very quickly.

    Back to the drawing board.

    Can't say I'm surprised. Have you considered maybe a Punto? Cheap as chips to maintain.

    Looks good, and as bear1 says, they are very cheaply maintained (parts, tyres cheap, and you can often save labour if you want too as they're very easy to work on). Do definitely look under the sills carefully, can rot badly especially if they were badly jacked up in the past and that will turn into an NCT failure over time. Check thermostat comes up to temp properly too. If not, probably (like 90% chance at least) just a bad thermostat, which can be got for €30 or so, and fitted in an hour (accessible from top, bonnet, no need for jack or the like, though you will need a jubilee clip too). However, you do need to replace it as bad stat long term can lead to head gasket problems. Wiper linkages another common enough later NCT fail (part is only about €120 IIRC). And if the stereo is after-market be careful it doesn't flatten the battery (lot of folk wire them in a bit wrong, with that result).

    @Cianos

    Contingency - coming up to Christmas and I'm broke - systems activated :-) You'll probably never spend a penny on it and sell it for what you bought it for.

    No no. Just trying to make a sensible suggestion

    Gotcha. Got my hopes up there, I'd much rather take one off a Boardsie as I'm an easy target for a cowboy as you've probably guessed!

    What's the maximum budget?

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,078 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

    Those Civics are excellent cars. Very reliable and like LTL says you'll hardly spend a penny on it. You need to watch for rust in the door jams though, mine was a hoor for it.

    If I were in your position Cianos it'd be a 1.3 Corolla and then one of those Civics. Tbh I couldn't see you saving much if anything by buying another Focus and having one for a parts car. Unless you buy an absolute p.o.s, that is

    €800, a little more if there was a big difference in what I was getting.

    That's what I'm thinking now. I'm limiting my options in the hopes of saving in the future but it's really impacting the value I can get now.

    Not too bad at all, seller sounds honest, brilliant NCT. Think I'll be giving them a shout!

    You couldn't go wrong if anywhere close to described.
    It does look right so I'd put money on it being the real deal.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

    Needs a timing belt but with the value of the car so low, I would risk playing belt roulette.

    The only thing that I'd be suspicious about is the new exhaust, check under the car and see if the cat was changed also, if it was I'd walk, I've heard a few of those developing problems and causing the cat to burn out.

    However, more than likely it's just the back half that's been replaced.

    If they really have all the old NCT certs, buy it. It proves good mileage history and at least they cared enough to keep them. It's one of the first things I look for.
