Nice amount of KM on it as well. Shows the engine is well up for it.

That Seat Ibiza from a couple pages back has gotten a lot of inquiries, 5 people ahead of me to view apparently so might be gone before I get to it.

    In the mean time any thoughts on these?;

I seen that Skoda last night (on DD) and really liked it. Maybe someone can get into more details on what to look out for in them and as much as I like Mazda (had a 323 years back) the Skoda might edge it for me with only 82k+ miles on it for €500. Cheaper tax on the Mazda but I'd need to know the price of getting the door lock fixed and factor it in to the cost. Had to have 2 of them done years back thanks to some bollox breaking in. Is that Neilstown (Mazda)? Again, Skoda shades it for me.

Those petrol engines in the octavia are soft. A Mazda 323 would be a fine car if they didn't rust badly.

That's the old 8V 1.6 though, isn't it? Very reliable old engine. Not soft. The later 16V engines are soft, in particular the 1.4

That said, the later 1.4 (same as in the Golf) might be soft, use oil, go through a coil pack every few years, but afaik complete engine failure is rare if you regularly service it and don't do intergalactic miles

This Skoda is very near me so I'm tempted to go have a look. Any tips on what to look out for? Seems quite a low asking price and I think it's been on DD for a while so just a bit concerned.

i'd be bracing myself for it to look a bit more tatty in real life. other than that, if you get €50 off, you're doing well. they aren't bad, they are basic enough so there isn't a whole pile to go wrong. Again with a purchase like this i'd just be checking the basics, is the timing belt in date, is the clutch biting stong, check the fluids are a good colour and there's no unusual noises.

i'd certainly favour it to the Mazda 323.

The Octavia is taxed till the end of the year too. A very basic A to B kind of car but well built and reliable. With an enormous boot. We used to make jokes about the size of that boot in here :D

    For €400-€450 it's a bargain...

Well I rang him to arrange and he hung up on me when I said I wanted to take it to a local garage for them to have a quick look at it.

Well, prepare yourself for cars that aren't perfect for €500.

Taking it to a local garage will cost you another €100 - and then you mightn't even buy it.

Hanging up the phone though....bell end.

Yup. The garage actually belongs to someone I know and he said he'd have a quick look at it for me free of charge. Too bad your man didn't want to cooperate.

    Wow @ that 159
I thought the diesel 156 previous to that was better value....

sounds like heartache and looks like it was in a tip at some point, i wouldn't part with near 600 for it.

    another one in Dublin.

i refuse to believe it was owned by a priest as there is no Padre Pio or visible plastic Jesus statues on the dashboard. the seller is a bit of a dick too. be a grand car if you lifted it for €5-600.

Micra's a nice find. Cheapest possible motoring. Drive it for 6 months and sell it for €100 less than you pay now. Spend €100 on tax and €0 on maintenance. I'd buy that Micra myself if I needed to motor on half a shoestring...

Jeez, that wouldn't do it for me. If it's any use, why the lack of pictures. Can you not take someone along to give the skoda the once over. At €500 you really can't go too far wrong. You have to remember you're digging in the bottom of the barrel here.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

the thing i guess Mr. Cianos needs to remember; or at least bare in mind is that you stand a good chance of getting a genuine, honest Micra, Fiesta, Polo sized car for under a grand that has a decent bit of test and not too many complications.

when you are looking at a class bigger - Octavia, Focus etc, most of the stuff for under a grand with a long test is a bit more more suspicious as if everything is ok and the car is in good condition, clean body and no faults, in most cases they could make over €1k. that's not to say there aren't exceptions, but if you want the best shot of a cheap reliable car for under €1k i'd be staying with small hatchbacks.

Been a follower of this thread for some time now and see there's a fair bit of knowledge amongst a lot of you.

I am looking into getting a micra for my first car. I was originally thinking it was a good idea getting a micra less than 15 yrs old for insurance reasons, but the price people are asking for these cars seems a bit excessive to me...1300+ for a 2002 micra.

Saving the money on an older micra and spending it on the extra insurance cost as it would be over 15 years of age seems like a better option if the insurance doesn't come in much higher due to its age.

Would people agree with my thoughts / offer me some good advice.

http://www.adverts.ie/9314707 seems nice, hes accepting 1500, but still crazy money in my opinion

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

that's insanity for one with no test. it is clean and all but no.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

this is like 6 posts up, but just encase you missed it. go with €700 cash and hope for the best.

I beg to differ. Seen a few of those Octavia 1.6 8valves giving a lot of engine trouble too. Not badly maintained examples either.

Really? That engine is over 40 years old and extremely reliable even when driven hard all its life. I suppose with any individual low end vehicle now nearly 20 years old and worth very little, there can be engine trouble / a failing engine...

Well I can only speak from my own experience but Ya I've seen them give emmisions and oil problems. Even though it's an old engine there is different variants.
