I genuinely don't know how to respond to that! Is that a criticism of my approach, a disbelief of my accounts or just an anger at your own inhibitions which has restricted your ability to haggle thus pay more for stuff!

Ok so I do this for a living, I've got an inside line. And I'm bolshie which can annoy people. But I'm not coming in here to boast about my conquests. Au contraire, I think people should be as much like me in their approach to buying, especially given the forum that we're in here, which is to grab as big of a bargain as possible. I haggle for everything. Just my way. But let me tell you it works.

Its none of the above to be fair Long Time Lurker. Of course your approach is correct, you are a man after my own heart and I am all for getting something as cheaply as possible and bargaining with the seller where permissible (don't expect to start bargaining when doing your weekly shop at Tesco for example). There is no doubt in my mind that you have got such sums of money knocked off cars asking similar asking prices in the past and perhaps even greater sums if you work in the industry. So have I on occasion or two before but its not like I'd be buying cars too often. At the end of the day I believe your best bargaining tool is your legs and the fact that it is still very much a buyers market for such cars.

If you buy and sell cars for a living there is no doubt in my mind that you have to be bolshie and I'm sure that sometimes even being bolshie isin't good enough - sometimes you win, sometimes you loose. You mention you have an inside line - I'm really not sure if you mean in the industry in general or the specific Volvo under discussion. If you mean the car in hand and that you know the circumstances and for certain it can be had for €2k fair enough, I conceed you are privy to a knowledge the rest of us aren't. However, if you are stating that the Volvo can be had for €2k (fact), based on your inside line in the industry alone thats another matter and it is this factual statement which I take issue with. As I mentioned I have got similar sums of money of cars before but there has being other occasions where there wouldn't have being a hope in hell of knocking €500 off a car asking €2,500 irresepective of how persistant you'd be and the true value of the car - depends on the seller also and it is a call you cannot make until you have dealt with the seller or have the inside line on the specific car in question.

But to go back to the start. If that "doesn't make sense" to you then what can I do. Start a thread about how you want to pay more for stuff I suppose. Keep sentiment at the door though. Personality clash aint gonna get anyone cheaper cars round here.

To be honest if you had said the car could or even should be bought for within the €2k budget I wouldn't have said anything, its just the factual statement I do take issue with for the afore mentioned reasons. no need to start a new thread or anything like that and as mentioned if you do have the inside track on the specific car under discussion I do retract my comments entirely.

    I like these

Mileage is high @ 200k but assuming the Peugeot XUD engine which I'm certain it is then it should be good for many more if it was minded. On the plus side over a years test, good tyres and aksing a paltry €550

I really like this squashed BMW 3 Seires. There can't be too many left with this low mileage and as clean and unmolested and original. I would suggest you check insurance first though depending on your circumstances.

Nice bit of skangernomics there. Full TRD kit, nice power, very reliable, red is the fastest colour, a bit ASBO looking and probably insurance proof :)

Short test. Worth a look though. Durable practical family bus. Face lift version with those lovely sunroofs. 1.9 capable of inter galactic mileage.

They are a bit of an acquired taste alright. For what they are I do like them. It would be far from my first choice of car but I would certainly drive it. Can hardly be too slow either with a 1.9 engine in a car that size

€400, 6 months test. Squint really hard and it could look like any sports car in the world.

They are in fairness, very agressive looking. Great alternative to say a Golf or the likes for a young lad starting out who wants a good sporty looking car.

Any car like that in yellow gets my vote anyway! I'm hoping to buy a yellow Dodge Ram Hemi 3/4t over here!

I always liked those MG's dressed up in the full rally gear. Thought they looked very cool.

    Mercedes-Benz E-Class E200 53K Tax 07/16

8 months tax and long NCT. Car looks immaculate and those low miles always appeal to me. Admittedly it's on the pricey side and you'd need a few hundred off the asking but I think it'd be a lovely car to buy. I'd say you could buy it and it'd actually be running perfectly in 10 years time.

Oh no, they definitely do and lots of other trouble too. Really loveable car though, kinda like a British Alfa, yeah everything can be a bit **** but for some reason it just doesn't matter.

The second one recently. I know they aren't the most exciting variant but still a cool bangernomics vehicle.

High-ish mileage but 7 months test and 3 months tax.
