    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

€1100 for that? Awesome? That's the roughest car ever posted in here :p

For that kind of money you can get this '05 Volvo S80

    Linky

I know which I find more awesome :p

The person looking for a diesel Avensis won't be looking for a 2.0 petrol barge and vice versa. Sure the Volvo is a very nice car. Once the novelty wears off though are they really that much more special than an avensis?

I see your point about it not being in the best of condition(not exaclty surprising being an old diesel car) but If someone had two of those cars as options and found two in similar condition surely the avensis would be the better bet if running costs were the main criteria?

WTF is all the love for the pre-historic toyotas ?
I could think of few places i would rather not sit than in front of one of those corollas.
    Seriously - they are awful.

Anyway - its just my opinion and before you all say that they are the most reliable cars ever built blah blah....
For a grand or so you can get far more interesting cars - imo of course.
For a couple of hundred I can see the benefits - but the white one should be in the dreamers threat @ €1250.

    /rant.

And here I am looking at that Saab 93 LPT like what the **** would anyone dump their load over that for.

Takes all sorts. Takes ignorance to try and put someone down over it though.

Is it wrong for me to lust over the green rover 75 from last night? Are they RWD ? Any common issues I would need to be on the lookout for ? :-)

I know what you're saying and the Avensis will no doubt cost next to nothing to maintain. Not sure if that many people (with just a grand to spend) are specifically looking for a diesel Avensis. Or for a Volvo S80. Plenty of people in here just like a bangernomics bargain whatever it is the lot of us drag up from donedeal!

I guess some of us here in the '96 Toyota camp will never agree with some others in the '05 Volvo / Saab camp about what car is the best value for their tiny budget. Thankfully we're not all the same and we can all agree to disagree. Happy 2016 bangernomics to everyone :)

It is by no means special, but it is big, comfy, safe and like the Avensis it is well built and reliable. And it has a lot of poke for your 2l tax (5 cylinders, turbo, 180BHP).

The diesel manual? A very good car. Extremely reliable BMW engine (better than the ones that went into BMWs themselves). Prices have gone up in the past few years though as people are copping on. Not as good value for money wise as they once were imho. FWD. Interior build quality is not great. Very comfortable to drive. Old fashioned kind of car with all the wood inside, etc.

Good versatile motor with test and tax for 9 months.

More Toyota excitement. Long test, 4 months tax. At 7/800 quid she'd be great value.

Or what about a 1.8 (way better engine) auto. Shorter test but cheaper. Get haggling.

And yet the seller posted a pic of a Mondeo speedo??

If that is the selection you are left with then I'd seriously go for the Xantia. Comfortable, doesn't look as poor as the Starlet, economical and better spec'd.

I love the Xantia but I don't know how I'll fare on the insurance front. And I don't know whether or not I want to tax a 1.9

I only really do local driving with the odd spin to the other side of Dublin for work I do

Get quotes for the two and see. You could get that xantia for 400e id say. Think id rather pay the extra to be honest.

I've just been to see an "immaculate" Starlet in Arklow. What a waste of time!

I know at this end of the market you can't expect perfection but I was assured the car was "immaculate" but in reality it was a rusty POS. Interior was covered in mould and brake discs were warped. Bonnet didn't close flush. I could go on

I wouldn't have driven it home for 150.

Cost me 40 quid in fuel and a tenner in petrol station sandwiches!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

That's my local. Shame, would have been nice to have a chat. It wasn't that baby blue 3 door one was it?

Yeah, I hate that. That's why when I look for cars, I look in a ~100 km radius.

A gold five door. I would post a link but don't know how to on mobile.

It was just off the m11, brought the Cube down so it was nice that it proved itself. Terrible on the hills around Wicklow though!

Non import Celica, not too badly skangerised with a years test asking €750.

Looks well, but clearly dickied up a bit for the photos. That's in a panel beaters just up the road from my house.

There's a few garages together down a long lane, you turned off behind a closed down Land Rover garage?

Not my cup of tea, but 4 weeks tax and 4 months test for 550.

It was in a housing estate next to a Gala shop, just a little bit up the road from exit 20 off the m11. I got the impression the car was sitting there a while though, all of the seats were covered in mould (and the driver's seat is from a Corolla).

I know that at this end of the budget you can't expect perfection, but had he been honest with me I wouldn't have wasted my own or his time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,571 ✭✭✭✭For Forks Sake

Sh1te ad, but the gist of it is Audi TT NCT 01/2017 + tax 02/2016. €1950. I'd say it's probably rough enough in the flesh.

Yeah, that's 2 seconds from where i'm talking about.

That's the worst of if man, i've been there plenty of times, even with a small budget I always ask something like "i'm coming a long way to view this, is there anything major not mentioned in the ad". Rarely get an honest answer in fairness. I've seen some shocking stuff.
