Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Fantasy Rugby - World Cup 2015 (FSA)

    "It's the world in union
    The world as one
As we climb to reach our destiny
    A new age has begun"

On Friday the 18th our greatest remaining fantasy challenge of 2015 is upon us. The Rugby World Cup :) I welcome all our regulars and new friends we can entice for the next 2 months or so.

As usual I'll set up both an Irish Times league and an ESPNscrum league. I may also look into this Fantasy Rugger game that's part owned by Ian Madigan. Seems more stats based for those who want to push the extra mile.

I haven't yet checked to see if there's any rule changes or anything for the normal games but ye can check them out anyway.

The ESPNscrum game seems to have a new shiny interface and has £9,000 worth of prizes I think: http://fantasyrugby.espn.co.uk/ESPN/en/1/clienthome.do

    Pin: 1154776-9966

The Irish Times game seems the same old welcoming interface we know and are quite used to. €4,000 in prizes I think I read: http://fantasyrugby.irishtimes.com/

    Pin: 1343

I'll just throw up a link to Fantasy Rugger for now. I might have a look at it or anyone else who may have played it before I'd appreciate any feedback or info on it :) :http://fantasyrugger.co/

The first match is Friday night so make sure you have your team picked before 8pm. Perhaps a little earlier to be on the safe side :P

Seeing as I'm setting this up without too much notice before the thing stars I think leaving entry into the leagues will have a cut off of Friday week or so but we can see as things progress. I certainly won't accept entries come the business end of the pool stages.

Anyway happy picking. The English team was announced yesterday and more should continue to roll in over the next couple of days.

Boards has a Rugby forum which could be useful to scan over for ideas on who's playing etc http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=388

So together let us: "Crouch, touch, pause, engage" or is that "Crouch, bind, set"? :pac: It's been a few years since I graced the front row of a scrum :o

Anyway enjoy and I hope as many people join as possible. The crucial match against France should hopefully be enough for some regulars to join just to banter with our French expert Iroced :)

Nice work on setting this up Mr P .

Never heard of Fantasy Rugger before .

They never should have changed the Crouch, Touch, Pause, Engage statement :D.

Haven't time to give this enough research etc at the moment so I'll stick with ESPN as I'm registered there and am familiar with the setup.

  • Registered Users Posts: 16,305 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Prodston

I just hit auto fill and must go back and have some look at it later. Hopefully the teams will all be announced today.

There's a lot more planning needed than for 6 nations with rotation and what not. Not sure ill be taking it too seriously or stick with it beyond a week :pac:

Not sure I'm really getting the ESPN one.

Once the tournament begins, you have an allocation of 15 transfers to play with during the Group Phase (matches 1-40).

You can switch your designated Kicker on three occasions during the Group Phase.
Does this mean there's a deadline for every single matchday? They didn't split the games into gameweeks? Sounds super messy ...

The FantasyRugger one sounds very interesting but quite time consuming...

Looks like a good setup compared to Irish times one. 12pm deadline is restrictive though especially when the website was down last night. Laggy on the phone too.

It will be open until 19:50 or just before KO tonight. Apologies we got a lot of traffic due to the Independent launching a league on our site

I'd like to have done Fantasy Rugger but it was a pure rush job so I've just gone with the one I did before ESPN, picked a team there in about 5 minutes, pure rush job.

Yeah I just finalised my FantasyRugger team. Spent a good hour on it! I'm quite excited to see how this one goes. You feel you're really building up a team to compete in the World Cup, you need to ponder where to use your funds, your best players, think about rotations and fixtures.

If you change your mind here's some tips:
    • New Zealand, South Africa, France & Ireland have handy fixtures for the whole group stage (bar round 4 Ireland-France).
    • From their late games, Ireland & France strongest points could well be upfront, so you may actually get more forwards than backs from these and could get a cheap Fijian or Georgian player to cover for them in round 4 since the latter have a handy enough game.
    • Australia & Scotland have 2 games in round 2.
    • Tonga has 2 games in round 3
    • Romania, Uruguay & Namibia have 2 games in round 4 but as I already said it may be more interesting to consider a Fijian or Georgian player (need to see how the scoring actually works though).

    ---

By the way, here's the Uruguay side to face Wales:

Uruguay: 15 Gaston Meres, 14 Santiago Gibernau, 13 Joaquin Prada, 12 Andres Vilaseca, 11 Rodrigo Silva, 10 Felipe Berchesi, 9 Agustin Ormaechea, 8 Alejandro Nieto, 7 Matias Beer, 6 Juan Manuel Gaminara, 5 Jorge Zerbino, 4 Santiago Vilaseca, 3 Mario Sagario, 2 Carlos Arboleya, 1 Alejo Corral
Replacements: 16 German Kessler, 17 Oscar Duran, 18 Mateo Sanguinetti, 19 Franco Lamanna, 20 Agustin Alonso, 21 Juan De Freitas, 22 Alejo Duran, 23 Francisco Bulanti

I spent an hour there quickly making a team for Fantasy Rugger. It's right up the FSA's street with proper pricing and more in depth scoring so I regret not looking at it earlier.

I basically went big on the backline and the backrow while filling the front row and most subs with Georgia/Tonga/Samoa etc.

So I've got a team in all 3 now. Fried my head in the process and I'm just going to enjoy the rugby as I don't even remember who I have in my teams :pac:

There's a Fantasy Rugger thread in the rugby forum too: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057489919

    Right.

Joined both the ESPN & Irish Times FSA leagues. Feel quite lonely with my sole French flag in the ESPN one but I won't be impressed and I'll fight 'till the end and remember that "impossible n'est pas Français" :D.

    Almost auto-filled pretty much everything.

    Lets rock and roll! :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,262 ✭✭✭iroced

It's soooooooooooooo hard to pick the captain in the FantasyRugger one :o !

Just made a last min change from Matfield to Mvovo and then from Mvovo to Kriel :pac:. The scoring is so different than what we're generally used to that it's pretty tough to anticipate...

Ah welll good luck to you all and... allez les Bleus :D!

You had to choose a captain and a kicker just before finalising your team (the little blue C & K circles on 2 of your players ;)). Did you check which ones you randomly got? It may not be too bad.

  • Registered Users Posts: 16,305 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Prodston

I went for Pienaar as my scrumhalf in all 3 games as I thought he'd be kicking and a decent alternative if needed to Sexton. Went for Biggar as the sub out half in Rugger assuming he starts next week.

Pat Lambie kicked the first conversion anyway which is slightly disappointing.

I can't even remember my other players but some scored points I think. I'll be annoyed if I didn't have Gorgodze in all my teams cos I think I do, or planned to anyway :pac:

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,594 ✭✭✭MarkSRFC21

Decent enough start. Have sexton, o brien and louw in both games. Everything takes ages to update, which is a bit annoying

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,262 ✭✭✭iroced

Completely forgot how a load of bollocks (:D) the IrishTimes fantasy rugby was/is (you can select 8 number 8 )... Ah well. I'm not doing too bad for now (though I'll certainly fall behind when the round will be finished)...

  • Registered Users Posts: 16,305 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Prodston

I'm 2nd in the IT FSA league as it stands with a few good options to come today sitting at 747 overall

2nd behind Iroced in the ESPN. 764 position out of over 100k. I'm totally confused though. I think it's possible we can make transfers today and those players can play but it's too much effort to try and get my head around today. If I remain in contention I may educate for the next few weeks.

No scores for Rugger up yet but I'm delighted I did have Gorgodze in all 3 iterations :D Venditti as my starting FB with Folau benched is pleasing. I think these scores are updated tomorrow. I captained Anthony Watson I think which didn't go well though :pac:

Forgot to sign u[p for the boards league (espn) until now, it's only showing my gameweek score, not my overall, hope this rights itself when I am included in the league, I'm well back anyway.

I haven't a clue how the transfers work, if I transfer a welsh player in for todays game will I lose the points of the guy I transferred out?

I've got no idea. I'm sure it says it in the rules but that was far too much effort. There was certainly a deadline at 12 but whether that was just for USA and Samoa or for the day I don't know. Think there's only 15 transfers possibly for the group stages so with so much rotation it'd hardly be worth it but don't quote me on that either :o

I brought in a couple of Welsh players for today just o hopefully give myself a little boost. However I did it after 12 and the other game had already started, not quite sure where I stand now:o It seems that they are eligible for today though.

I can't recall previous world cups, are the teams announced days in advance for all the games??

I've got Cuthbert anyway I think.

Yeah same as any Test matches they'll be announced a few days beforehand.

Just popped into my head if GW2 starts midweek then we won't know the weekend teams in time. More an issues for the IT and possibly Rugger.

I need to go read the rules I think :o

And you have the deadline counter on the top left of the page.

That said, you only have 15 transfers during the Group Phase. I'm not sure Welsh players are really worth a transfer considering their next games (though I'm actually realising I could have used 1 today, 2 in total... ah well).

@Swiper. I'm afraid if you made your moves after 12 you'll have your Welsh players for the England games ...
No scores for Rugger up yet but I'm delighted I did have Gorgodze in all 3 iterations :D Venditti as my starting FB with Folau benched is pleasing. I think these scores are updated tomorrow. I captained Anthony Watson I think which didn't go well though :pac:
Got my captaincy on Kriel on Fantasy Rugger. I guess I should have left it on Matfield. Though with so many things included on the scoreboard, maybe tries & assists are not worth as much as on the more classic fantasy rugby games.

    .

I've made a huge screw up so, the ticker which counts down to the next transfer deadline seems to say whatever it wants, when I made those transfers today it was definitely showing something like 45 minutes (no days or hours), now it is saying 51 minutes:confused::mad:

    Mine's just saying now.

I actually quite like both versions. IT & FR with 4 designated Rounds and ESPN with daily games deadlines. Both involve strategy and planning and as far as I'm concerned that's what I found the most exciting part of fantasy games .

Mine is completely bollixed so, I'm still being offered transfers for week 3 and I now have 15 transfers again.

What could be the reason for this??

The Welsh 13 Allen has a hat trick but I can't imagine too many had him in. I hope not anyway!

So fantasyrugger finally updated! I really like it. In a way, it's a bit like a more detailed and complex version of FPL where you need to build a balanced team (on the field and the bench!) with some strategy involved!

It's soooooooooooooo hard to pick the captain in the FantasyRugger one :o !

Just made a last min change from Matfield to Mvovo and then from Mvovo to Kriel :pac:. The scoring is so different than what we're generally used to that it's pretty tough to anticipate...
Had I left it on my initial gut instinct on Matfield I'd top the boards league! Though happy enough to be up in 5th there :). Now to find who are the Australians most likely to feature in both their games!

    -

So, round 2 here we come biggrin.png! Beware the deadline is today at 2.30 pm GMT !!!
For the entire round in FantasyRugger. For today's game in ESPN. I don't really know for IT... This one is a bit of a mess. Like we have 20 transfers in total ?!??! Including the finals??? and IT. Transfer rules here for IT => http://fantasyrugby.irishtimes.com/Article.aspx?id=153 ;).

Not all teams line-ups have been announced. Hopefully we'll get one or two more before deadline.
Think I read somewhere that Australia were going a 2 teams route for their 2 first games, which is bad news for the fantasy games.

I've done my transfers for all 3 games. Deadline for Rugger is 2:30 for the GW and I've left a few big guns on the bench assuming they won't be playing and making use of that bench. Impossible to know just what way teams will go with selection. Only 3 transfers is a bit annoying too.

The ESPN game has daily deadlines but I've made 4 transfers and won't be touching anything until Saturday now again there.

Likewise with the IT but I think (I'm assuming and take no blame for being wrong here) you can make transfers during the GW up until each game starts. Made 4 of my 5 today anyway and will probably sacrifice playing 6/7 forwards to replace Sexton if he's not included which I'm assuming he won't be.

This is a head wreck with the higgildy piggildy fixtures!

    Jeez... It's com-pli-ca-ted :o...

Between my dropped, benched and not featuring at all players I'd need far more than 3 free subs to accomodate my FR team. The real disappointment is I made the absolute wrong call on my sub Romanian hooker (all my plan's falling apart here).

And my backs are depleted. Don't know if May & Brown will play. Nonu & Kriel are benched. Mvovo is dropped. And had planned my subs for Round 3 stocking on with Tongan players :o...

Brown will definitely play and May is very likely too, although Nowell could be a concern. In my opinion :P

I've gone for Parra in all 3 games and as kicker which is really my only French coverage bar Picamoles staying in the FT.

I wanted Fofana or Nakataki (spelling?) but not enough transfers for that luxury.

Scottish center Mark Bennett is my left field gamble to hopefully play both games and Jonny Gray in the second row.

In Rugger I took Earls out for Sonny Bill but I liked Earls as a centre on the wing but think Bowe and Fitzgerald might get wing spots with Zebo at FB

Impossible to predict though so went with players already announced to start. Savea my captain in Rugger.

No Japanese players so as not to jinx them :)

I decided to remove my IT team. Don't have time for 3 fantasy games and the fact I messed up on my original line-up makes it pointless to play now. Would have needed 5 changes today and at least 2 or 3 extra ones before the week-end. So I'll have ended up with less than half my 20 tally for the finals. I actually do think it's very stupid and nonsensical not to dissociate Group phase and finals .

For ESPN I made 5 changes (yeah I'm crazy !!! :pac:). Guirado out Ford in. Guirado is not on the teamsheet while Ford may feature twice (he started all 5 last 6 nations games). Dropped NZ Coles for Australia Kepu for the same reasons and also to accomodate SBW for now benched Kriel in the Centre (already had 3 NZers). Got Giteau for Joseph hoping he could feature in both games. Anyway Joseph could now miss the rest of the group stage. Also took a punt on Parra (for benched Pienaar).

Will see which Australian(s) to get for their game vs Uruguay when we'll know the teamsheet. Hopefully I don't need to change too many Irish players too (though I presume Sexton & POM will be benched).

For FR, I subbed in my 3 Scots (R. Gray - hopefully he comes in today and plays a big part of their USA game -, Wilson & Laidlaw) and transferred in 3 Australians, mainly for non playing players (Moore for Guirado, AAC for Mvovo & Giteau for Nonu).

Was all satisfied and then... realised I only had benched Woodcock for NZ for their Namibia game ! So, made over(deadline)time panic moves (not even sure if they'll count or what - was able to make them and I can now see it costed me 30 pts - SBW has to have a blinder now :pac: - and that the trasnfer icon is greyed over... so maybe just maybe I got lucky here) to accomodate SBW in for Kriel.

But, thing is I didn't have the funds for this move and then realised I made a big mistake in getting a £65m Australian hooker (while I could have gotten a £25m Romanian one who also has 2 games). So, since I was £5m short I eventually replaced my non-featuring-on-today's-teamsheet £30m Romanian hooker for the £25m one who starts today (a typical knee-jerk pointless sideway move we'd call it in FPL  :pac:). Ah well, hopefully Turashvili will feature for Romania double round4 games now so that I can brag about my "great" strategy :p :pac:...

    - edit -
Feel exhausted now... And this week-end RWC & FPL will coincide. I need to duplicate myself :pac: !!!

Yeah unfortunately it's always the case with the minor nations. Think Tonga suffered from that too at the last WC and their defeat to Canade cost them finishing ahead of France in the Group stage. Though it'd probably have meant either England or Wales in the final, so from your Irish perspective it seems to be it wasn't too bad it was the Frenchies instead :p:D.

Those with Laidlaw and Pocock absolutely cleaned up yesterday. I was lucky I had Bennett or I'd have lost touch completely I'd say.

Around 600th in IT and back to about 1.4k in ESPN. 2nd in both FSA leagues.

I'm 60 points behind first in ESPN. 53 behind first in IT but only 38 behind 3rd

Fantasy Rugger I might know about this time next week :pac: I'm tied 7th in the rugby forum league after GW1 but I don't know if they've got overall standings?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,262 ✭✭✭iroced

Not a good day for my fantasy rugby teams yesterday.

Down to third in ESPN (was joint 1st before). Think you messed up your maths. I see you 20 pts behind first in the ESN FSA league (I'm just 1 pt behind you).

In Rugger was 5th after the first round in the rugby forum league. Not sure I had a great day yesterday in it...

Ah right. I see you got ambitions. Good  :D. After all if we're aiming for top1k in FPL why not going for the title in ESPN :p ?!

So that makes me 61 pts behind first.

17th in the France league (out of 1071 teams) and 56 pts behind 1st.

Fantasy Rugger [...] I don't know if they've got overall standings?
Think they're working on it. You can actually suggest "improvements" to them. Received an e-mail where they listed a couple that had been suggested to them and on which they're working on ;). I really like it. The salaries to manage, the exhaustive covering of all the rugby positions. Maybe they could change the deadlines like in ESPN & IT. They could still keep the 4 rounds but allow for daily deadlines (like in IT) and then it's up to you how you want to manage your transfers.

Into the top 100 (99th!) overall after tonight, going to make the most of it because I've made half my changes and just have the one kicker change left.
Still, the best ranking I've ever had by far in fantasy rugby :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,747 ✭✭✭Swiper the fox

Haven't a clue what I'm doing (ESPN) but I finally got a call right by bringing in Milner-Skudder before last night:)

I'd say it's actually a really good game this time around, pity I haven't more time as I think I'd really enjoy the strategy element of transfers before matches and watching for the players likely to play most minutes, especially against the minnows. Transfers used before now will bite us in the ass, I have 11 left, is that about average?

  • Registered Users Posts: 16,305 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Prodston

I was on Savea last night but it's the people who had both that cleaned up as most would have had at least one. I'm going backwards in both games. While still obviously doing well. Early days yet but my ambitions of actually trying to win one of them is looking unlikely after the Pockock/Laidlaw/Milner Skudder axis of the past 2 days

However the Scottish team was announced there and Mark Bennett starts again so hoping he can do the business once more.

    Teams for GW2: http://www.planetrugby.com/story/0,25883,16016_81607,00.html

They seem to be added to the list as announced.
