BAHA Implant in Dublin

    Hi,

I have unilateral hearing loss in my left ear resulting from an open lip schizencephaly. I've been reading up on the bone-anchored hearing aids that seem like they'd be a great fit for me. Does anyone know of a clinic/consultant in the Dublin area that offers these? I understand there are demo devices you can try as well which would be very beneficial. I assume I would need to get a referral from my GP for this?

    Any help appreciated.

Get in touch with the Cochlear Implant Team in Beaumont Hospital (Dublin) or the ENT department Beaumont Hospital.

http://beaumont.ie/clinic_search.jsp (then click on the box "E" for ENT)

Hey - did you ever end up getting the BAHA? I’m thinking of it myself and would love to know what you think

The waiting list to even see a consultant to discuss whether BAHA would be suitable for you is 3+ years (with exceptions to the wait time for severe cases).
After than you have another wait for the surgery but this would be a lot shorter.

If you're going public, expect to be waiting a long while.

If you're going private it's going to be a lot quicker, but potentially very expensive (depending on your insurance).

Either way, get your GP or current ENT to refer you to the BAHA/Cochlear specialist in your region. If public, write a letter/email every few months asking for waiting list updates, probably won't improve the time you wait but you might get a consultation in a slot that was cancelled by someone else or something.

    Thanks for your reply.

I have already seen the consultant, gone though the trial period and am scheduled to undergo the surgery very soon. The thing is I am still very nervous about it and looking for someone who has had it done so I could reach out to them and get some advice.

I've tried to contact most of the deaf societies but there doesn't seem to be many people they know who have had the BAHA implanted. Anyway, if anyone knows someone - I would appreciate if you could let me know.

    Thanks

Really? I checked out Facebook and found there was no groups in Ireland, they're were a few in the UK though. I went with the standard BAHA as that is what the surgeon advised is the best one.

The attract casts a shadow over your head that can affect a CT scan if you ever needed one and the sound quality is not as good as the standard (are so the surgeon was telling me anyway)

I went to the local GP a while ago and asked for a referral on this as I'm running at over 90% loss in both ears, so life is a bit quiet.

6 weeks later I got an appointment in Tullamore hospital, which they explained it would be one of the dublin hospitals who would do this.

Waiting on a MRI appointment now to further investigate whats in there (they wont find much LOL LOL )

Actually scared, worried and not even sure I want this but I have to at least try.

No way, an MRI? I didn't need to get one of those at all. Have you had consultations with any surgeons? or gone through the trial period?

Its a long road when getting a BAHA!
