I feel I am stating the obvious here. There are now so many cars in Ireland that it is dangerous for cyclists. Sorry cyclists. There is now no room to accommodate you on Irish roads, so it's time to retire the bike until the cycle lanes are built and roads widened to fit you in. Otherwise, you are taking your life in your hands

I use to cycle from Tallaght to the City Centre and back for work every day and I hated cycling through Rathmines as far up as Terenure since all the cars are always parked on the cycle lanes meaning you have to cycle in the middle of the road... absolute nightmare.

Get rid of cars from our streets before we get rid of bikes. I don't cycle myself but I drive.

Having them all go round on monocycles would free up a bit more space.

Really worth it's own thread? Even with all the existing threads on this topic?

Having them all go round on monocycles would free up a bit more space.

Having them all go round on motorcycles would free up as much space and also give them a decent turn of speed with which to take up their position on the road and refrain from getting in grown-ups' way. Not to mention the added benefits of brake-lights, indicators and a hooter. And compulsory, proper helmets, and tax, and a license and... and...

So here is this afternoon's missive - I call for an immediate Pedalling-Bicycle Amnesty, whereby any and all who voluntarily surrender their infernal contraptions can therefore and henceby avail of a subsidised Honda CBF125 and IBT lessons.

    Yours in road-safety,

Most Rev. James Daniel Ignatious Aloysius Kirkpatrick St. Jude Goose.

Banning private cars off the roads is the most effective way of making the roads safer, cleaner and cheaper. Even the leftiest greens in the world wouldn't touch that one though. Pussies.

Couldn't agree more. This would have the added bonus of sending V8 Range Rover sales through the stratosphere. You could go lantherin' across the fields home of an evening after a skinful a' the stout-ale.

I'm wondering how long it will be before this turns into an 80 page crapfest about why cyclists should be banned.

I worry about some of their antics at times and have witnessed several ugly incidents. Word of advice try not to lose the rag and hit someones backwindow with a drink bottle, you could really get a nasty beating.

Having said that some motorists do have a bad attitude towards them, for instance blasting the horn and shouting abuse out the window is not acceptable behaviour. Try to remain calm.

Obviously, in the grand old tradition of Internet discussion, you are all varying degrees of totally, absolutely, and entirely wrong. And I am right. Also, I am smug.

    Therefore /thread.

Waste of time. We need to ban buses so we can get scobies and foddeners off their backsides and onto CBF125s as well. Don't thank me, I'm a Humanist.

That's my point. I get annoyed when I see the government strategy on cycling. You'd swear driving a car was on the decline. If anything, it's the opposite. Then you have the prats who wear the professional looking cycling gear and they are cycling two and three abreast on busy roads. It's all an accident waiting to happen

Get a smaller car or use a motorbike.
Use just one lane, don't waste road space.
    Park off-street.
    Don't make unnecessary journeys.
Instant licencse ban and seizure of vehicle/bike for all road traffic offences.

If we use the space more efficiently, there will be plenty of room for everyone.

    Problem solved.

Or ban the cars. They're the ones that actually cause the most accidents.

Oh, wait. They'res plans for that.

The problem with this thinking is that as soon as cyclists put away their bikes to wait, the motorists will be "why are you building cycle lanes for? There are no cyclists".

Rather than "build it and they will come" it has to be "they are already here, now ****ing build it"..

While there are assholes of cyclists, what about the assholes of drivers who think you don't have to move around cyclists but cut in as close as possible and frighten the s**t out of you. France knows how to do it properly was there at the beginning of September for a week with my husband we brought our bikes, a week of sheer pleasure cycling on roads and not having to worry about traffic, the few roads we did travel on with traffic passed you by very carefully, A really enjoyable week

Cyclists have got to be the worst people on the face of the earth. They think they own the road, cycling 2 abreast on busy roads is asking for trouble. I've lost count of the amount of rows I've had with these self righteous idiots. I can do what I want in my car because I pay road tax. End of story.

What a load of bull! Ban cars from citys/towns as it solve two problems polution and possibly obesity as people would walk and cycle everywhere instead of driving short distances!

So, take the cyclists off the road - let them all drive to work instead - yeah that's going to free up road space and solve all our problems:rolleyes:

Cycling two abreast on busy roads is entirely legal though.

I also pay road tax but I can't afford to drive to work. Cycling to work takes a full hour off my day (over going by public transport) so cycling is a no brainer for me.

Plus it's fun and a great way to maintain fitness.

I think a better plan would be to drive over all vehicles parked in cycle lanes with a big tank. That'd make more room on the roads for cyclists.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Knasher

Bring back horses I say. We had none of these problems before cars, when everybody used horses instead.

Admittedly we did have other problems, like horse crap on the roads, but I assume they've solved that by now.

I agree. But what really gets me annoyed is seeing these Sunday league football players wearing clothing appropriate to what they're doing. Thinking they're pro footballers or something with their shorts, jerseys and football boots. They should be wearing 3 piece suits, the goalie could even wear a tophat and monocle to stand out.

Are cyclists aloud to weave in and out of cars? It's very fustrating on the quays in the morning. Also if you are in a car and turning left and there us a cyclist going straight on behind you, do you let them off?

It'll be winter soon. Winter tends to cull the quantity of cyclists. Only the real hard core of nutters cyclists decide to continue with their bicycling during the long, dark days of lashing rain and cold. This is a good thing. Overtaking a gaggle of Lance Armstrong wannabes three abreast and ten deep is both dull and fraught. They should not be further encouraged, they'll only get ideas.

Have you tried checking your mirrors when turning left or right, or are you an incompetent driver?
