Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Darragh Maloney said Arsenal have underachieved in Europe.

Surely it's simply a case that Arsenal aren't a great team and the last 16 is basically as good as they are.

    Bull****.

Where was the focus, the urgency?
We've seen this all too often under Wenger.

    When will Giles retire.

    He's an idiot.

We have a reputation for under performing against these smaller clubs. It was brushed aside when I mentioned it yesterday. Never underestimate the bottling power of Arsenal haha.

18 years in the CL and we still can't defend a set piece.

I don't think Arsenal are in the top ten in Europe so last 16 isn't under achieving

If champions league form dictates whether a team is great, then man city are absolute rubbish and should have their premier league titles stripped.

Really don't understand the "not propery prepared" line of criticism. The players have to go out and perform. Shouldering all the blame on wenger is ridiculous

He chose the players. He chose to make the changes. He didn't prepare the team right. Every man and his dog could see Giroud shouldn't have been out there, so why did he start?

We already discussed the players in the thread.
Wenger hadn't that team properly prepared by any stretch of the imagination.
    Poor everywhere including discipline.
The buck stops with the person in charge though.

So players play well then good aul Arsene, the players play **** again it's the players fault not Arsene's, right?

agreed - so many players out there with so much to prove - to show to the boss that they were worthy of a place in the first 11 and they just didn't cut it. Debuchy and Gibbs in particular were awful. Not absolving the regulars either, Koscielny didn't look interested, Cazorla was half-hearted and Ozil made a lot of mis-placed passes. Giroud needs cop-on and you could forgive what he did if he were a teenager but not at 28/29, should never have given the ref a decision to make.

Not saying that at all. What Im saying is that I dont understand how some people are shouldering the all the blame for this result on wenger. Are the players not culpable at all?

This is 110% his squad and he thought no player in world football could be got to improve it. These performances are the norm under Arsene

No shortage of excuses from Wenger, was he watching a different game?

    because his better then walcott

Their recent scoring history (tonight included) would suggest you are wrong.

Also in hindsight, we can all see that tonight's game would've suit Walcott with the space available in behind their back four. Surely Wenger would've seen this from his scout reports.

But he still stuck with Giroud.

I would have picked Walcott for tonight too and posted this before the game.
Simply because he likes this ground and scored 3 for England on his last visit. Horses for courses.

Arsenal aren't great (by top European standards) in the premier league either.Based on how they play in the league I wouldn't be expecting much more than a last 16 appearance from them in the champions league.

Was it arrogance when we played like that against Bayern/Barcelona/Milan?

Nah that was just plain sh*tting ourselves.

Two very different ways to go about losing a match.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,828 ✭✭✭gosplan

    Lads that was a disaster.

How many times have we performed similar to that in Europe???

There's a stink of arrogance when playing against what is refered to as lesser teams.

Very true. It comes from the fans too though.

I'm not arsed checking back but fairly sure a lot of people felt wholesale changes would be suitable and we'd still win easily. Like this was the equivalent of a league cup game.

I get resting Walcott for Giroud. Leaving both Ramsey and Coq out a mistake in hindsight though.

All that said, we just need 3 wins to qualify really, 2 at home with Olympiacos away the tricky one.

It really depends on the draw tbh. I wouldn't fancy us against Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico,Juventus, Bayern, PSG over two legs but against anyone else I'd give Arsenal a more than evens chance.

Stating the obvious here, but none of the English clubs are impressing at this moment in time.

Giroud is massively overrated by many, many people on this forum. He isn't anywhere near the quality we require.
