Thinking about heading down some day, but there's a few places around that area listed on the website, but I don't know if there's actually any public open space to setup the telescope and not be bothered by car lights and stuff?

    anybody been?

The Skellig star party usually happens in August/September each year.

Other then that its superbly dark it just that you have to watch out for the clouds.

Just curious, but why isn't it later in the year when the nights are longer?

Its for the summer star clouds at the galactic centre in Sagittarius. :)

The SSP takes place at the Skellig Lodge, and they have a nice big area for scope setups. The woman who runs it, Freda, is awesome at looking after the astronomers. Highly recommended.
