Updating S3 to android lollipop

Hi,
I have an S3, G-19000,have looked after it so battery still good. Thing is i cant get updates to some apps now because its stuck in android 4.3. I've looked at a few videos, which involve rooting and well, i'm afraid of bricking the phone if i try that as my tech knowledge is limited. Any advice on how i bring my phone to 2015?

Unfortunately the S3 is unable to get Lollipop.

However there are ROMs that are based on Lollipop that should work, CyanogenMod 12.1 for example:

It's been ages since I put a CM on my old phone, but if you follow this step by step then it should work. Just make sure you have everything backed up, since it will normally reset your device and wipe the memory

Would it be easier and safer to get 4.4? I think this can be downloaded from samsung to laptop

I'm still on 4.4.4 (CyanogenMod 11) but haven't noticed any apps that are 5.0+..

Ok, i'm going to have a go at this tonight.

Correct me if i'm missing a step.

1. Back up phone to SD card (numbers, messages, photos)

2. Ensure PC connects to phone -

3. Root Phone

4. Back up phone with a recovery tool, TWRP is what i've seen is a recommended app.

5. Upgrade phone to Kitkat

Sorry if i'm goin on but I may have found a short term solution until i get more confident on rooting. Just found this on google so wondering if its legit/trustworthy?

Use the cyanogenmod one click installer and let it do all the work for you!

To be honest it gets a bit too complicated for me and i wouldnt know how to go back if i did a step wrong. Is there a safe site out there for getting old versions of apps, not play store?

The cyanogenmod? No. I dont even know to root the phone so you're dealing with rank amateur.

And thats ok and the reason I'm suggesting the installer. You download the program to your computer, plug in your phone and it does most of the work, ever so often prompting and guiding you to check a box here or whatever, it really is simple. You end up with a phone with a custom recovery and rom way better and smoother than stock Samsung.

Custom recovery? Ive backed up my contacts and photos to external sd. I dont store any other items like files on phone. Any other items I should back up? Apps I can re download.

Will I need to keep updating the software? As in every few months to keep things wotking. Have an m8 tv box and im hopeless at updating that almost useless to me after only a few months

cant find the cyanogenmod one click installer, website just takes me to a a download of the rom but not the installer app, it was removed from the play store
