Is it worth upgrading my TV?

Hi folks,

Currently have a Samsung UE40D6100. It's 40 inch, 1080P, LED, 3D.

I bought it at the end of 2011 for approx €1000 and can honestly say it has probably been one of my purchases I have been happiest with in recent years.

Even though it's almost 4 years old, I don't think I can remember a TV I've watched since I bought mine that has as impressive a display at full 1080p viewing. Some friends have Sony TVs with that backlight feature but they fall quite a bit short in terms of picture quality.

The features I value most are:

• Picture Quality
• MKV file compatibility
• Smart HUB - Paticularly the PLEX app
• Don't use the 3D too often but quite impressed with the quality as I use official Samsung 3D Glasses that are recommended for use with the TV.

As it's a few years old, I've considered upgrading to a 4K TV over the next few weeks and this is what I had in mind:

I know there isn't a crazy amount of content for 4K just yet but it's more future proofing that anything else. I would be losing the 3D functionality but I think I could live with that. I also want to increase the size, hence the upgrade to the 50". Staying with the Series 6 as I don't see the need to upgrade to 7 or 8.

What I was worrying about was the Frequency/Motion Rate. Mine is 200HZ CMR and the newer TV is 900HZ Motion Clarity. Is Motion Clarity is the same thing as Clear Motion Rate? As in, will the new TV be 4.5 times better than mine in terms of clarity?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you're in no real rush to upgrade, maybe it'd be best to wait another year for UHD displays to maybe mature a bit (some may not be up to certain standards) and lower in price.

If you do decide, it's important that you actually go see the TV in action, IMO. Ignore the nonsense like Motion Clarity (which I see also called PQI and specifically a Samsung thing) and see how it works in real life.

Buying into technology as an early adopter is not 'future proofing', it involves taking a major gamble that the technology won't significantly change before it becomes mainstream. Remember Betamax?

I think you'd be mad to rush into 4K until the middle of next year at the earliest. Wait for the big consumer electronics show in Las Vegas in early 2016 to see what's happening, I certainly wouldn't buy in late 2015.

Agree with byte above when it comes to technical descriptions. Like the cosmetics industry, the TV business is awash with pseudo-scientific 'features', most of which mean absolutely nothing.

Thanks very much for all the info guys, this is exactly what I had hoped for. I might wait until mid 2016 to make the purchase.
