I wish they would fix the unfair scheduling and just extend the tournament time wise

Can never be perfect but the fact some teams haven't played yet suggests improvements could definitely be made.

japan have a decent break now until samoa and a week then to usa which are two winnable games for them

To be fair, that's not the case. It's not fitness that's telling, it's the big game experience. Japan were in this game the whole way through until now and only poor decisions making has cost them.

All is not lost though, they will give Samoa an good game and should beat the United States. They can get out of this pool yet.

    Gwan Scotland!

What does this say about South Africa? What does it say about Japan? What does it say about Scotland?

Japan are knackered with a four day turnaround?
Scotland got the rub of the green with the ref decisions?

    Some terrible refereeing going on

I reckoned before the World Cup, that Scotland could give South Africa a good rattle, now I think they could beat them and top the group.

best suggestion i saw was the 4/5th ranked teams in each group play the weekend before the big opener [england v fiji] so the tournament has the grand opening but the fixtures are not stacked against the smaller nations

Hopefully this is the end of this Japanese fairytale

Scotland's route is arguably easier if they come second.

I have no idea what it says about South Africa. Scotland really haven't been overly impressive, they've had a hefty slice of luck. Japan are a bit naive but are still superbly coached and this will stand to them. Two winnable games coming up for them

Japan utterly screwed by the scheduling in the tournament. They cannot be expected to play two top tier nations back to back with 4 days between. There would be uproar if it happened in the Pro12; it's ridiculous that it's happening in the RWC.

It says South Africa didn't do their homework and that Japan have only had a few days between two very tough games. It says Scotland weren't dumb enough not to do homework against a side that beat SA but are a much weaker side.

The first thing they should do in future world cups, is give the tight turnarounds to the Tier 1 nations, give the lower ranks a fighting chance with 6/7 days rest. Look at the number of minnow teams that will have played two games during an 8 day rest period for Ireland.

Scotland been really professional today. Japan have a great chance against Samoa but would need other results to go their way due to lack of bonus points.

5 groups of 4 with the 3 best runners up making the quarters?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,122 ✭✭✭Peterx

    Japan are showing tiredness now.
A fresh Japan could beat this Scotland side.
Once again boo to the scheduling.

Pass was forward from Russell in the build up.

It's a pity about the short turn around.

Eh, they had to change both props due to the short turnaround, that cost them big in the first half. Completely different game if your set pieces are more stable early on. Once they were behind by 14, it was a massive challenge. A closer game would pan out quite differently.

How much would you extend it by? Its already 6 weeks long.

I don't think that works too well with runners up etc qualifying

Hastings and Geech getting very excited about Scotlands play. They looked pedestrian when the game was a contest. Reckon the Samoans will take them.

I take it back, they are clearly falling to bits now. Long break to the next game for them thankfully.

Fair play to Scotland. Great result for them. Their game with South Africa is going to be HUGE!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,029 ✭✭✭vetinari

Extend or change the group size so everyone gets similar rest time.
At the moment it's a complete disgrace. Why do tier 1 nations need even more of an advantage.
Add an extra group and do something like top number of runner ups make the quarters.
There are solutions if you want to fix the problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,599 ✭✭✭matthew8

Same thing happening to Romania, game tonight v France and against Ireland on Sunday. Clear bias in the scheduling.

Except that France have the same turnaround from Saturday to Wednesday.

In fairness, you could look at France having played on Saturday and then playing again today...4 day turnaround for France.

The pool stages should just take place over 5 weekends instead of 4, so every team has a full week (or 2 weeks for 1 team) between matches. 2 games of rugby in ~96 hours is ridiculous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,776 ✭✭✭Noopti

Wow, feel sorry for Japan. Have wilted very badly....not surprising considering turnaround time from a very physical game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,816 ✭✭✭corny

How was Denton not penalised there. Clearly playing the ball on the ground.

I'm trying to work out the permutations for this group now :)

If Japan win their next two games, they'll end up on 12 or perhaps 14 points.
If SA win theirs they'll end up on 12/15 points.
That would assume Scotland will lose to SA, and after 5 points this game, could end up on 12/15 also if they beat Samoa and USA

That group could well end up being close enough

South Africa got 2 points against Japan. I'd still have them (SA) as favourites to top the group.
