Irish people tend to vote with their feet. Race could have many positives like course and rugby and so on, throw in one negative and people talk argue for a long time. Timing obviously is important for some here on Boards and there is many more that are not here. I'd say there is a reason why b in Fixx sold out in 24h.

I reckon it is because it is the most established and long running series in the Dublin area and not down to chip timing.

Don't worry I'll be my skin suit if if I can still fit in and stand upright to run :o

That and people don't want to do the A race - still places left.

1pm on a Sunday, it sure does put a big hole in the day of a family Sunday for instance. Sometimes it's just about being a complete banger :)

I would happily race/gett lapped in the A race if it was not on at 1 pm. I considered entering the A race for this one.

I guess that says a lot about the average age of the field (no spring chicken myself).

Great to see a few more juniors racing this year and David Montgomery racing in Belgium.

Post a pic of your cross bike. The muddier the better!

My new bike for this year is a sensa fermo sl with a few bits changed.
shimano 105, al frame, carbon fork. Running narrow/wide superstar components single ring up front (38- 11-28, may go to 32), carbon tubs, vittoria cross evo tyres, swissstop yellow, egg beater pedals with changed bars, stem and saddle. Have a new saddle on order. All in ready to race it's coming in at about 8.4.kg. For some reason (probably to ensure I beat RobFowl) I wanted to build a light cross bike, few more bits to change which should knock another couple hundred grammes off without sacrificing reliability

    366283.jpg

First time out on it I broke the derailleur hanger :( Havent been out as much as I would like, but first race this weekend. Looking forward to it.

Other cross bike is my trusty surly cross check. Steel frame & fork, shimano 105 gruppo with sram 900 53/39 chainset (i use it as a winter bike as well as cross bike). Uber versatile bike, have raced this single speed and geared. really love riding this bike.

    Anyway, show us yours!

Likewise there is an ideal bike for an adventure race but there is no rule stopping you turning up and riding almost anything...

In a real adventure race (Not the crappy little multi-sports races you get in these parts that label themselves Adventure races) a mountain bike is normally mandatory kit. It would normally also happen to be the optimal bike for AR as well, since MTB is one of the fundamental component sports of AR (along with navigation, trekking/mountaineering and kayaking/canoeing).

Cos it's a cyclocross race. In a cross-country skiing event, one does not allow downhills skis. Same principle. CX is an older discipline than MTB. It is a different variant of bike racing. Why does road racing not allow MTBs? Why does track racing not allow MTBs? How many rhetorical questions can I include in this post?

Take your point but that is basically just saying you must use a CX bike because it is a CX race (they both have CX in them) and this is the type of policy I'm sure the bike
industry loves. Wouldn't compare with track which requires specialist facilities: a CX race is basically a race in a field.... the biking equivalent of cross country racing for runners. Saying this on a CX thread may be akin to blasphemy, but it is :D

Say for example somebody did mountain bike races and owned:

    http://www.rosebikes.com/bike/rose-psycho-path-3-275-2015/aid:739030#2Y-1255h-1255i-1255j-1255k-1255l-1255m-1255n-1255o-1255p-1255q-1255s-1255t-1255u-1255v-1255w-1255x-1255y-12560-12561-12563-12564-177eT-3CRpD-3CRpE

Quoted as being 9.2kg but you can see from the configurator that if you had lighter tyres you could get the weight down to under 9kg which is CX bike weight. So with the right tyres would a rider on a bike like this be slower than if he was on a CX bike (this is a genuine question BTW, would it be slower)? And assuming he wouldn't, he must be scratching his head wondering why he needs to buy another bike to just race in a field.

I didn't make the rules, the UCI did.
A particular rider, if he rode an averagely specced MTB would be slower than if he rode an averagely specced CX bike.

Since Monday I have been looking for Luke's updated blog. This has led to an incredibly unproductive week as I am still here on Thursday hitting F5 repeatedly.

Mind you, I am getting quite good at Android app development.

Anyways, CX is CX not XC, if everyone started using MTB's then it would hardly look like cross?

Traditionally Cross racing was done in the winter by guys who raced the Tour de France etc. in the summer, so beefed up there dropped handle bar skinny wheels bikes and used them for CX races just for training...typically in farmers fields, to improve bike handling skills and keep some fitness for the Summer, the idea of run up's and obstacles was to get the circulation in the feet going during the cold winter weather..

Here's mine before I got it all covered in grass and muck. Bought second hand to replace my Kaffenback which was far too heavy for me. First time I've had an Alu frame and I really like how it feels.

Not sure white rims are sensible on a CX Bike :D

Plan is to stick a narrow/wide front ring on it as soon as I get my Winter Road Bike sorted.

    i have a caad x too...changed it to 10 x1 last week..using a standard 38 tooth..
cut the chain short so its nice and taught...
hasnt dropped once and ive tried hard..! including a few trails up around slade..
narrow wides are 3 times the price of a standard ring..
for that- id rather have 3 rings..- say 36- 38- 40 and change as required
