Probably going 4-2-4 now. Oscar off Batshuayi on.

Don't understand Hazard coming off.

Moses for Hazard? Fabregas stays on the bench?

The defense hardly inspires. Heart in mouth stuff

And we should have had 3 penalties. The push on Oscar, the one we got and the handball by Byram? in the wall.

Nevermind ye're goal came from Carroll diving after pretending to kicked in the head.

The ref was **** for both teams.

    Great start ... 3 pts ... boom , let's build on this.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 960 ✭✭✭Crackle

Plenty of positives from that. Hazard looked more like his old self, Kante picked up where he left off last season and the midfield was in control for most of the game.

That said, this backline isn't gonna cut it. Another CB and a fullback is needed.

All told, things are looking a lot better than last season, so far anyway.

Nice start and great to think that we can actually score when needed in the last 10 minutes.
Also liking the change of formation rather than stick with the same when wanting a goal.

Great spirit to get the goal at the end.

Best game Oscar, Ivan and Hazard have had in nearly a year.

Costa playing more central is definitely helping his game but he should have seen red. I'm not sure how we'll cure that but at least Michy looks up to deputising.

Kante is amazing. Had 5 shaky minutes and then dominated the midfield singlehandly. Fantastic signing and if we can sign 1 or 2 first team calibre players like him Top 4 should be no problem.

Defense is still shaky but we knew that. West Ham were awful and didn't threaten them till late.

Little bit disappointed by Willian. He seems to have regressed from the first half of last season. Could easily be upgraded on recent form.

Loved Conte's reaction to the winner. Proper Chels. :D

Pool fan, wasn't having a go at ye. Shocking refereeing missed penalties and 2 second blatant yellows missed. Apart from that ye well deserved to win.

After the complete disaster of last year that was everything we could have reasonably wanted from the opening game of the season. Every player played well I think. WE completely dominated the game apart from the first 10 minutes and a few minutes around the West Ham goal.

That being said we still need another 2 or 3 players. We definitely need a centre half and a full back. I'd argue that we could do with another winger as well if the money is there. Moses and Pedro don't fill me with confidence as back up.

Fair enough. You're right that Costa probably should have gone but the ref hadn't the balls to make the big decisions all night.

He booked Kante early and gave Costa the yellow for the new dissent rule (to get the few marks from the assessor) and bottled every other big decision after.

Michy did brilliant for the Costa goal.

Hopefully we see the Costa-Michy partnership in some of the games.

We got plenty of crosses in and showed proper width for the first time in years.

Thanks be to Christ we're not hung up on 4-2-3-1 and No 10's anymore.

Jes Moses really summed himself up when he came on, direct running straight into the defender. Doesn't seem to have a trick in him. Hope we don't have to rely on him for a creative spark off the bench. Surely Currado is a better options?

Also apart from the obvious standout performers Oscar, Kante and Hazzard, I thought Matic played well bedside Kante.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,683 ✭✭✭LightningBlue

What's the story with Fabregas though. Bemusing he didn't come on as a sub even.

Is he being dropped so we can play Kante + Matic to protect the defense till we get some reinforcements?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,137 ✭✭✭TimRiggins

Thought we immediately looked threatening with Michy and Pedro on the pitch. Thought Hazard, Costa, Oscar and Kante looked good. Ivan and Cahill much improved. Would have liked to seen Fabregas for Matic. Going forward I think Willian could slot in the role Oscar played tonight, allow Pedro to come in on the right.

Good start though, thought for the most part looked very solid. Kante was fantastic, very harshly booked early on.

    Curse of my FF team

nice to get a good start. While I agree that oscar had a good game tonight I still feel Fabregas would be better suited in that position. Just felt when oscar got the ball in centre circle and turned to play it fab would've been able to pick out a better pass and control the game more.

Most enjoyable Chelsea match I watched in 10 months. Hazard was lightening. Won't win the league though without 2 signings but won't be embarrassed like last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,563 ✭✭✭✭peteeeed

the high pressing was really good, noble and a few others lost the ball in their own half quite a bit . the ref was a bit nuts last night, booking that weren't bookings and then costa doesn't get booked , very strange

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,603 ✭✭✭grumpymunster

Well that was sort of pleasing.

The Happy Hammers were poor enough and our defence is frail to say the least but there was passion and we needed to see that after the quite insipid displays for most of last year. Good to see Bilic not forming part of the mockoutragebrigade certainly could have been a second yellow for Costa but as he said it was late but not deliberate or reckless so kudos for that, it was nice to see a ref give Costa the benefit of the doubt for once.

No doubt that Roman is certainly still one of us, loved his reaction to Haz going close in the first half.

ToL winning the fans over already(Jose who ......) but I don't know how far he can take that defence.

Good to start with the 3 points.

Really impressed with Kante, love his attitude and energy though never realised how small he is..........some player and a terrific signing

Costa was playing too deep last night until Batshuayi came on (and even then, he was still a little too deep.) He is awful with the ball at his feet, cannot beat his man, has no skill whatsoever and can't pass even a few yards so it makes absolutely no sense to have him getting the ball at the halfway line.

He needs to be camped in opposition half where he can make runs (his biggest strength) in behind and shoot quickly without having to beat anyone but the keeper.

There are two ways that I can see to do this: 1. play 2 up top in a "classic" strike partnership just like we saw for his goal last night with the lay off from Michy or 2. PLAY CESC FABREGAS!!!

I'd definitely like to see Matic swapped out for Fab, with the shift Oscar ws putting in and Kante buzzing around beside them there should be enough work done to cover for Cesc. I was worried about it being too small/weak but really Matic doesn't win anything in the air anyway, I don't think there's that much difference really.

Matic adds nothing. He does not pick up good defensive positions, he doesn't win the ball cleanly and he's awful with the ball at his feet. Mindblowing to see a player fall so much from his excellent 14/15 campaign.

Agree with your point about Kante and Oscar. I'm actually think Oscar suits this role very well with his workrate and technical ability. Lets hope he can make telling contributions over the season.

You sure you're watching the same match? Matic was very good, not up to his prime, but vastly improved on the dross of last season

I thought there was many times where we could have pressed or pushed on and won the ball but he just jogged behind. Thought the game bypassed him to be honest.
