if not Earls at 13, who else should replace Payne, if he is injured? Luke fitz is our only other realistic option and I doubt he would be much better

That would be my preference tbh. Cave, Luke, Earls in that order.

Fitz is a big lad and has a strong defensive game, wouldn't mind seeing him there. Funny how people have gone from outrage that Earls is out of the 23 to despair that he might start at 13, if he does he'll be fine.

I reckon Earls has been training at 13 hence his exclusion from those rumoured teams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 110 ✭✭lunarhog

Oh yeah, Cave - good point. Id love to see Henshaw go toe to toe with Bastareaud if he was picked OC

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,676 ✭✭✭✭MJohnston

imo we need a good bit more in defence at 13 than Earls can provide.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,837 ✭✭✭✭Pudsy33

Sky sports are reporting the team and Payne is in?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,154 ✭✭✭✭Neil3030

I'm now hearing from a friend who is usually around 50/50 with his insider info, that Kearney is also out and Hendy will start.

Payne out is not ideal for this game, but feic it tis a RWC injuries are going to happen. None of our center pairings are perfect but all can do a good job in different ways. For what its worth I'd have Cave in v that France midfield but Earls will do a job there has in big European games before.

Its funny how Schmidt was defended to the hilt with bringing in toner and Kearney, now that earls is reportedly starting at 13 there's cries he isn't good enough to play there against France.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,837 ✭✭✭✭Pudsy33

Sky sports have published the team that was going around the past few days.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,883 ✭✭✭shuffol

I'd be very concerned about Earls in midfield against France, aside from the obvious fears of Bastareud running at him I think if there is space outside then Payne is more capable of executing an overlap be it through a switch with Sexton or just angling his run and timing his pass correctly.

Aside from that I don't think Earls is as good at getting his body right in contact to present the ball which is more important in midfield than the wing. He also tends to take a step infield when he receives the ball and can be a bit naive with some of his carries. Given how big a turnover threat Bastareud is this could cause real problems.

Start Henry, SOB to inside centre, Henshaw at 13. :D

You know you're wasting your time right?

They'll only prescribe some of this for you anyway :pac:

There is nothing funny about it at all.

How is that funny, or even connected to anything?

Would you like us to criticise Schmidt for Payne getting injured, that's reaching a bit.

No Cronin is a surprise although I rate Strauss highly, would have though Cronin from the bench would be physically speaking better, although in a tight game I'd back Strauss's throwing

    D Kearney

Payne is such a massive loss. Better centre than Earls in every way that matters and in some ways exceedingly so.

Bowe and Kearney won't be seeing much of the ball unless it's sailing in-front of them at knee level on it's way to touch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,776 ✭✭✭Noopti

    Hah....team already out.

Wonder if the press are pissed about something. All reports this week have been about how open the French are compared to Ireland.

Not surprised to see Strauss on the bench, he has been in better form than Cronin.

Cronins throwing is fine but in a tight game I'd back Strauss for other reasons.

The team is always released before the press conference starts. It's happened with every team in every game this WC.

At least it sounds like Payne will be back after this full time (however long that lasts)

You left out the rest of the quote which was effectively Schmidt saying he has one eye on next week. Seems Henderson is his man for the quarter final.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,784 ✭✭✭total former

Asked about size difference between Earls and Basta, Joe says "more often than not he'll be marking Fofana" - so maybe Henshaw will defend the 13 channel?

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 23,969 Mod ✭✭✭✭TICKLE_ME_ELMO

Payne had swelling in the foot after Wednesday's training. Bit like Trimble's injury? Also says the selection choice is a mixture of injury and Earls' form?! His form has been on the wing. I call BS, Joe!

He's an extra groundhog, but Cronins dynamism is a plus from the bench. If it was last play of the game, 5m from French line and a score needed, id much prefer to have Strauss throwing than Cronin

Don't remember press releasing it like that though. It was always "leaked" and would appear in articles. Having said that I haven't been paying attention to team announcements as they happen, at all during this world cup. I would just see them on Ultimate Rugby or Twitter an hour or two after any press conference.

Any reason for Cronin not being on the bench?
