Well there's a surprise, you're predicting doom and gloom for MON and his team.

I predict we'll qualify, like I've always predicted.

    Fingers crossed...

This is the most likely outcome. Even with a full strength team I would still expect us to lose to Germany so tonight is going to be very tough. With Scotland being at home I think they will get a draw with Poland.

That would mean that all three outcomes would still be a possibility for us; Lose to Poland and we are out, draw with Poland and we get a play off place and beat Poland and we qualify automatically.

It will make for such a huge game on Sunday which I wouldn't be against since I'll be in Warsaw :D

A draw against Germany, and a draw in the other game would make it so that Ireland won't have to worry about losing v. Poland as much. Poland are the kind of side that can make a win happen vs. Ireland, if needed, and they'd really need that win if they get anything other than the three points against Scotland tonight. Basically, Ireland need to be getting at least as good a result tonight as the Scots do.

I'm worried about the absence of Whelan tonight. Not because I rate him - I think he's fairly poor - but because I've yet to see a defensively balanced midfield without him during the MON era. Whelan, to be fair to him, is the most natural defender of the bunch, but I think there are a few combinations of our CMs, not involving Whelan, that would work well if given time together. Unfortunately that time hasn't been afforded yet and so tonight they'll still be looking for that understanding while playing against Germany.

I've still got faith in Robbie to continue producing the goods, but I think for punishing the high back-line that Germany like to play Long would be the best bet for tonight.

I'm kind of expecting a good performance, just because the lads might not be feeling much pressure when the opposition are so obviously favourites. But unfortunately a good performance could still see the team getting tonked.

Back down to earth with a bang tonight. 6 or 7 nil to Germany.

Scots to win 1-0 with a last min goal vs Poland

We will hold on for a while but lose 2-0

Poland to beat us well Sunday and Scotland to win handy leaving us finish in 4th

Poland are terrible travellers , we almost beat them here last March

    Meh to all the pessimists!

1-1 here (us having led) and 1-1 in Hampden (Polish equalizer in the last 10 mins) leaving it a straight shootout between ourselves and the Polish in Warsaw for the automatic place. :)

Re Whelan; I've watched him numerous times in the Aviva now at this stage and the conclusion I've come to is he just 'gets' International football. Keeps it simple most of the time and nearly always does the right thing. Creativity or bossing the midfield isn't his bag; he's a limited player but he does a very good job for us. There's a reason he starts for Stoke more often than not.

Ireland to nick it .... 2-1 ... 2 goals for Robbie...

There is a reason and it's that Brittish football managers favour hard work and discipline in midfield over skill. I think it would benefit any team to move away from the Brittish football mindset.

I feel we're gonna get quite a beating tonight. No Whelan is a huge loss and hopefully Gibson (who I assume will start) can step up to the plate. With Given in goal too, I can't see how the Germans don't score at least 3. Hope I'm wrong, but I think we'll lose 3-1/4-1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,729 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

I fancy us to get a result tonight.

remember the last time the reigning world champions came to Dublin for a qualifier? when we snatched a draw from the jaws of victory!

either that, or we'll get hammered. I think if we concede in the first 10-15 minutes, the floodgates could open, get to half time 0-0 and we could do it!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,401 ✭✭✭Royal Irish

O ye of little faith. I've Ireland and Poland to win at 18/1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,834 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

To be brutally homest.. we just dont have the players its as simple as that. We have a bunch of guys who can put in a decent shift but little in any creative sence. We are missing some first choice starters.. we really need to go out and play ugly tonight.. anything else and Germany will hammer us... important we get to half time level i feel

That's a stat that's been overlooked. Ireland have conceded the least goals in the group so far. Two games ahead that could change that, though, but still worth remembering.

Think people are completely ignoring the fact we, Ireland, can hit some serious diagonals and cause some absolute danger in the mixer. Germans are notoriously dodgy in the air.

It helps that Brady is the best crosser of the ball we've had in some time.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

I love Given for the great contribution he's made in the past but he scares me in goal now.

He's just not up to it.

Really hope we can get a result tonight.

Murphy ahead of Long means that if there is a striker coming on its Robbie,

Long must be wondering what he has to do to get a start

I believe the Germans saw the Irish team, ripped up their original line-up and formulated a surrender note instead upon seeing Ward and Murphy in our line-up

Sweet Jesus, that is a horrendously bad looking Irish team.

    I'd take a 2-0 defeat now.

Murphy in ahead of Long is criminal.

This is a manager who used to stick Gerry Taggart and Steve Walsh up front for Leicester City. Pure hoof ball stone age football tonight with Murphy up front.
