So I'm going backpacking on Thursday around South East Asia and we'll be heading to Japan from Bangkok in December.

We haven't picked up the Rail Pass for Japan yet and from what I can see you can buy them in offices all around the world.

I was just wondering if this was just a simple matter of walking in and getting the exchange order as I'm thinking we can just pick it up the day or so before flying into Japan.

Has anyone else done something similar?

I had a friend buy mine in Amsterdam for me. No hassle at all. Just get it in whatever country you are in before Japan.

They are great way to see Japan. I didn't start using mine until I left Tokyo so I didn't activate it at the airport. You can activate it Tokyo station is that suits you.
