Quite an intense display near the northern horizon in Achill during the past hour. Not too many high streamers, but a lot of activity within the band of light itself. Seems to have died down now.

I was out for a walk about half an hour ago and thought I was imagining faint pillars of light to the north. Obviously not! :-)
I'm between Nenagh and Thurles by the way.

Went to Kippure and Sally Gap this evening looking for it, hoping the Dublin light pollution would be a bit removed, but didn't see anything.

Just wondering if anyone here can give me a guide on how to picture the aurora. Was out tonight with my Canon EOS 300D at the auroral peak. Was watching the aurora trying to take photos but the camera would not even try to take a shot as all the settings were wrong I assume. I tried on my smartphone (Samsung S6) but these all came out black. PS I am a novice on camera setup.

So for those of us in Dublin, where would be good spots to go to try to spot the aurora with the least light pollution? I saw someone mention Hollywood Great near Naul before.

One of mine from up near the airport last night (10-11.30pm)

    The R121 to be exact.

It was actually alot stronger at around half 9 though when i could see it from my attic here in Finglas.

    Great picture.

So I probably did see it when I looked out at 11 or so near athenry
I saw a few of the higher bits poking above the clouds briefly but since no body had pictures from after 9:30, I assumed I must have been imagining things!

Anyone know the prospects for tonight?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,068 ✭✭✭Iancar29

    Short timelapse

Looks likely again tonight but dunno if it will reach the strength it did last night for so much of the country to see it. Also more cloud moving in later.

services.swpc.noaa.gov/images/aurora-forecast-northern-hemisphere.png Hmm, get in the car or stay where I am, kp5 predicted and supposed to be most chance of seeing it around midnight. Been watching the above for the last hour or so and the view line has been creeping slowly southward.

How far south is it likely to go?

You should try the Aurora notifier app it's free and pretty cool too.I can't post a link but it's in the Google play store anyway.

Depends on the strength, kp 7 is a good indication that it would get down as far as Dublin at least. Fingers crossed for clear skies.
