On a sadder note, Liam Ruiséal’s bookshop is closing after 101 years in business.

Indeed sad given the long history and the dwindling number of small book shops.

Sad but not surprised its gone at all. They had prices of books that were way dearer than everywhere else. The layout in there was awful too. I wanted to support them but they have to have reasonable prices. Last time I was in there I said this place will be going soon as they have no deals at all and everything is very high priced.

Vibes and Scribes second hand part will be next. They don't do any deals either. (They do deals on books that I wouldn't take for free and everyone must agree with me as they are always there!)

I'm surprised places like the Time Traveller's bookshop are going, definitely no deals there.

Had a weakness with some of the prices.

Leeside music on McCurtain Street has closed.
Bit of an end of an era for anyone of a certain age that was into music.

Apparently they do a roaring online trade, in particular for their specialist maps, etc. Might have a very slow in store trade but seem solid otherwise.

When I saw them setup I thought they would be gone within months but figure it was online sales keeping them going.

That begs the questions why spend a fortune on rent and rates along with store kit out costs if most of you sales are online. The owner could probably do it all from a home office if they had storage.

French sports retailer Decathlon is coming to Ireland and will have a Cork store. Still a few years off tough.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/business/retail-and-services/french-sports-retailer-decathlon-to-open-up-to-nine-shops-in-ireland-1.3379797?mode=amp

will be great to see them in Cork giving some of the existing sports stores a run for their money. One in particular should feel the sting and might have to reduce their sky high prices.

to be fair, in Cork those stores you mean are lifestyle shops where the people can help you to choose between two colours but won't know the difference between two shoes.

planning application up on the (old) premises of Fox Flowers on Model Farm Road for a cafe. Would be nice to see something use that nice corner shop location especially now that the Rendez Vous is closed.

what in a totally different building? The name of the cafe/business was named, something like Grattitude or something like that.

Nope, it's the old development behind TCH that was stalled during the crash.

ah OK, very good. But I was on about planning for a cafe in the Fox Flowers premises across from Rendez Vous. Will be great to see some eateries around there (Rendez Vous was just too expensive).

Rendezvous going on the market for about 1.3 million. Saville i've been told will be selling it, the sign should be up any day.

Some amount of student apartments going up in that part of the city now. What's the story with that? Are they cheaper to build or what?

Higher density than residential apartments. No need for parking. More rental yield.

Yeah but from a planning perspective is cramming students into the city centre a good idea. Surely we should have mixed use developments and space for professionals and families to live in the city too.

I agree but in fairness the students put a lot of pressure on a private rental market that doesn't need it. There are what, 20-30k of them?

They're generally looking for or happy with a certain type of accommodation. Basic, bills in, and no 12 month lease. Generally privates LLs would rather not deal with them and vice versa.

I'd prefer to see more variety of accommodation being built near town, but the amount of office and retail and hotel space going up is a bigger problem. At least this increases the crude total of beds for rent.

All these student appartments should help free up some of the houses around glasheen wilton and bishopstown which would be more suitable to families which can only be a good thing
