Seems to be a lot of work going on in the unit in Douglas (Tesco) centre, the unit that's above M & S & below Dennehy's gym.

Always seemed a waste of space being empty but I see there's a skip up there now & shopfitters in it. I wonder is M&S adding a second floor ?

It looked to me like there is (also?) work being done on the space in between the entrance and M&S on the ground floor

Yep, there will have to be a way of getting up to the unit, so there's either stairs going up from within M&S or it will have to be in that ground floor space you mantioned

It's M&S - just walked past it and there's signs up now

Rendezvous rumoured to be opening in September. A deal is nearly done.

Fox Flowers old site is going to be a cafe, opening in the coming weeks.

I was living in Galway at the time they opened up there and the place was mobbed no matter what the weather, it was a license to print money really. This place should do well.

Until everyone gets the same idea and start opening ice cream parlours all over Cork.

How about a donut/ice-cream shop? It'd surely be a success for our 3 day summer.
Toblerone donut topped with a scoop of pistachio ice-cream. Mmmmmm

Rumoured to be locals from the area with a Rugby interest. Or was it an interest in Rugby?!

    See job ad here: https://www.jobs.ie/ApplyForJob.aspx?Id=1697354

There is work going on in the former Game unit near McDonalds on Daunt Square.

I'd guess that is where they are opening.

Good to see a unit that has been empty for years being finally being occupied even if it is a convenience store and salad bar.

Seems strange. The council seemed to be adamant in making/keeping Patrick St. as a 'high end retail' location, hence no new bars etc. Personally, I'd have thought some nice wine bars would really add to the street. But a convenience store then is deemed better?

At least it's being used, empty shops always look awful IMO.

I don’t see Idaho etc giving out about these business’ opening. How are they different from coffee shops affecting the look of the street? They say they’re only fighting for the good of the city but they’re only really shouting when it might have an effect on their own pockets.

Yes..... it’s called Basil. Glad something opened there - it was ‘Cahill’s Butchers’. Parking can be a bit of a challenge there though.

Fingers crossed for them, its an Artisan Deli, so may well attract a specialised audience who would make the journey and persevere with the parking !. Hassetts are supplying the bread, so good for another local business as well.

The owners are ex Touchdown Tavern & Paddy the Farmers

That didn't take long! Great to see.

C'mon someone try it and let me know. I'm rarely around the city centre for lunch during the week so I need a guinea pig to report back. I live around the corner, so a good Italian is one of the few things the 'Victorian Quarter' is missing.

Interesting article about the state of Douglas village. I'm not sure that more cars and more parking are the best solutions, the area is already congested to high heaven.

I am still of the opinion that the area needs modern office space. The cinema site and the empty site next to it has huge potential and will make or break the area. I would love it to be a large mixed use office, hotel and apartment development. Douglas has extremely limited daytime footfall in comparison to Carrigaline (which has a hotel near its centre) and Ballincollig (which has major office space with Dell and VMWare in the village). A lidl there would be an absolute disaster and far worse for the area than the Barry's field site that was turned down.

Rents must be an issue as businesses seem to have no trouble opening just off the Main Street but nobody wants the sites actually on the main thoroughfare. Saying the Tesco development killed the area is overhyped too, as the article said some of these sites have been vacant for 20 years+

How long has the Opening Soon sign been up on the old off license? It must be over 12 months at this stage. The supposed Donnybrook Fair site in Dunnes seems to have little or no progress either.

It definitely needs more office space. We were looking to expand there, and there were so few options once you're a company of >20 people. The airport business park was an option, but has so few lunch/shopping options (surprisingly important in attracting staff). The city would be better, obviously but a traffic nightmare.

If there was more office space in (or near) Douglas, there would be a lot less traffic funnelling through Douglas into the city centre. I commute from the city centre to Douglas every day, and traffic's a breeze for me.

It's funny how one entire side of the road is dying while the other is thriving. As you say, it really does need one big, reliable 'anchor' business.

Blackpool Shopping Center has open office spaces. There are two big empty office areas in the Atrium.

The comments on the article on facebook are depressing, somebody made a very similar suggestion to me (i wonder if he read this thread?) and got lambasted with comments like "my area doesn't need a hotel or apartments", while this comment is the most liked on the article:

i would extend the cinema and do it up and build on something like a monkey maze and do package birthday cinema and playzone, id build a little market stalls behind the cinema on he green wasteland with stalls fir farmers markets, i wouldnt have build kfc where it is now as id use it to free up traffic in around douglas making a road in behind dunnes and the housing estates and break out just before the bridge or link up with the south link and turn off for passage, wollen mills knocked down and turned in to a better retail park like mahon or blackpool, put in a lidi in to barrys field where it got objected. the main street to turn in to a presdestion zone and put up proper framers stall for the market, have a summer dance night in the park like what the have out by the lough with irish music and dancing..
    I despair...
