@SteBreen: BREAKING - Gardai hunting dissident republican over murder of Garda tonight

    Chief crime correspondent Irish Sun

It's been described as a murder suicide. Can't for the life of me think why they would be looking

PSNI have confirmed that this is unrelated to the incident where a woman was shot in Newry today

If what I'm currently hearing is correct, this is a much bigger tragedy than first thought. Unfortunately I cannot go into details but I hope it isn't true.

Twitter so dangerous at times like this.

Just one example of many being someone who recently tweeted "RTE say 'such and such that I'm not going to repeat as it may or may not be true'"

No evidence of the thing that are saying that RTE have said on the RTE news site or any of RTE's social media. Do they have a direct line in to RTE or something?

The things that are said may potentially true, but on the other hand so much potential dodginess, and in this case it's been retweeted 60+ times so far.

Nothing against you but there's really no point posting something like this its not adding much to the discussion only fueling more rumours.

Says a lot for him so.

It's on twitter so it has to be gospel?

I purposely didn't include what I've heard so as to not fuel rumours. And the point of my post was to prepare people for the fact that almost every theory so far may actually be wrong so that they do not pass what they currently know on as fact.

I've a good friend who is a garda in that area, in his 30's with 3 young kids. Hope he is safe. RIP to the garda involved.

What an awful weekend, so many people dead and so many families devastated.:(

The shooter also has 3 children with the woman he shot, as she is only 20 they're all so young. Six children ruined in a single moment. What a tramp he was.

This makes me sad and angry.

I feel so sad for that garda and his family.

What makes me very angry is that this seems to have been totally unjustified and a complete waste of a decent life. I thought that these people and their " legitimate target " mentality had "gone away" - my mistake...

And that. Unlike the children of the guard the other 3 will be better off with their father dead, can only hope their mother survives.

This is another tragedy that is loaded with many questions in particular systemic issues with legislature.

One thing we should all recognise in this country that guns do not solve gun crime. Gardaí being unarmed is how it should stay but with properly resourced specialised units that will provide back-up.

It all seems so pointless! Sincere condolances to all famalies involved!

What is the world coming to. A Garda shot dead for just doing his job in the line of duty.

My god this is so tragic. RIP to the Guard and I hope the killer's wife makes a full recovery.

RIP to the Garda and condolences to his family. Its just numbing to think that they would have seen him this morning before he left for work and now this tragedy in the line of duty for the public, its just shocking and there are no words

Who exactly are 'these people' are you referring to?

Obviously members of illegal terrorist organisations out on bail. Do you really need it spelled out to you?

    Yes please do.

We should all email our local Garda Stations voicing our sympathies on the death of their colleague, and that we appreciate what they do for us every day.

The Garda situation may not be perfect, but they are the first we would ring in a crisis. And that is the reality. They deserve our support in good times and bad.

    RIP to all.

What a feckin terrible weekend for death and tragedy all the same.
