@mickthehack: The man believed to have murdered the #garda in Omeath tonight as on bail for IRA membership. But that was for dissident republicanism.

On Sky News they say the Gardai is in his 30s and was married with three children.

This is another tragedy that is loaded with many questions in particular systemic issues with legislature.

One thing we should all recognise in this country that guns do not solve gun crime. Gardaí being unarmed is how it should stay but with properly resourced specialised units that will provide back-up.

It all seems so pointless! Sincere condolances to all famalies involved!

Ive argued this before, garda should be armed. Scum have got worse since my day. Scum do not respect cops. How many stories have i read where scum beat the ****e out of the cops. And the scum laughing all the way to his suspended sentence. fcuk em, you raise a hand to law enforcement, you get the the full force of it back.

No gun could have stopped the gard being shot. Its sad how people think they've a hard life or sh!tty job. Yet here was a man sworn to protect us in a less than perfect world.
I've friends and family in the gards.
Hope the government give him a respectful send off

Garda helicopter flew over my house earlier, knew something was going down, you never see it up here. Turns out he lived in my village, RIP.

    RIP. What a horrendous weekend.

The Examiner has named the killer.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/ireland/11925736/Garda-shot-dead-by-man-awaiting-trial-for-republican-terrorism.html

A police officer has been shot dead in the Irish Republic after responding to a domestic disturbance.
The gunman, who was on bail awaiting trial for dissident republican terrorism, is believed to have taken his own life after shooting the garda and a woman.

The gunman had been on bail awaiting trial for IRA membership at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin after being arrested at the start of the year following a joint Garda-Police Service of Northern Ireland operation to target dissident republicans in the border area.

Absolutely dreadful. The Louth Division have had a terrible time of it, second state funeral in as many years.

Whatever about naming the gunman in this case - surely it's a bit early for the Examiner to be naming the poor Garda?

    R.I.P.

they do get the force of the law. the gards arrest them and the judges sentence them within the guidelines. the guidelines and sentences aren't great but thats up to the politicians to change it. its also up to people to make sentencing an election issue by raising it with anyone who comes to the door. arming the gards isn't going to stop scum from being scum, and its not going to make scum be afraid of or respect the gards

Sure they still deny the McCabe killing...

More irrelevant sh1t from classy you, the PIRA admitted to it 19 years ago, hardly current affairs unless you have a link to prove otherwise that they still secretly deny it?

Lol 1/10 poor attempt at baiting, would not hit it ;-)

These dissidents see Adams as a legitimate target since they oppose the good Friday agreement! Same dissents have attempted to murder Gerry Adams and other SF members so in answer to your ignorance no the dissident won't be getting a PIRA funeral
, he may get one from what ever scummy dissent group claims him, rira, cira, 32csm,rsf eirgi,

And how do you know this at this very early stage? Source please.

I'm not sticking my head in the sand. I know what still exists. Stop making assumptions about me. You called me a bot because of that post? Pathetic.

Looks like I was correct. I take I you will retract his remark
