Bay trees sprouting at Base, what to do?

I have a couple of potted bay trees since the summer, doing well

However I noticed about a month ago that maybe 7 or 8 little shoots had sprung up around the Base of the stem.

They are now a couple of inches high. What's the best thing to do with them? I assume they will just get bigger and probably take nutrients away from the main tree

    Should I cut them out?

quite safe to nip them out if you don't want the plant to bush out at the bottom.
