Other than the players everybody else has mentioned, I thought Origi did ok for a fella that hasn't really played a lot in the PL. Lallana showed a bit more today too than he normally does.

He did ok but what good is ok. Ok will get you 6th or 7th again. It is tough for the fella being thrown straight in there.

Really disappointed with Moreno. The excuses are wearing thin. Hes here over a year at this stage. Needs a big improvement from him but not sure if he has it in him.

Might be better further up, as it is he is a liability at LB.

I wonder will Ricky get a look in again at LB?

What's encouraging is that the players seem to understand what Klopp wants from them, as shown in the first 25 minutes. A few more weeks on the training ground and we'll be seeing that for much more of the game.

Origi did fine, he's young and inexperienced. He'll do well in the cups, let's not forget he's our 4th choice striker.

I don't think Skrtel has it in him to change his style to what Klopp wants, definitely the standout weak link today.

All in all, missing the majority of our attack, Klopp's first game and away to an in form side.. good result.

We need a cb partner for Sakho or we'll just stay as we are imo. Skrtel is such a liabilty.

As someone mentioned, Origi did well up front. Got little support and held the ball up well. More game time will bring him on loads.

Realistically, Spurs should be winning that. At home, Liverpool missing loads of players. Yeah, that'll do. Very happy with Sakho, Can and Mig.

I know Milner was never exactly Iniesta for City, but he was mostly tidy and solid when called on. He's not even been that for us so far.

First touch is shocking since he arrived.

How long will Skrtel last under Klopp? Sham of a player.

    I wouldn't go that far! :P

Origi did well I thought, should have put his head on that rebound but he spent 90 mins up on his own and put in a good shift.

Sakho is a rock we know that already. Finally can got to play in his proper position and he was immense easy to see why he is so highly rated.

I think mignolet will benefit from having a manager who has confidence in him I don't think rodgers ever had.

Moreno had a poor game but he fits the system well, I look forward to seeing a slightly more complete performance from the team next week.

Gotta be happy with that, impressed with the defence especially and of course can was great I thought. Looking forward to Thursday now.

I might be overreacting, but Can could become World class under Klopp. Has all the tools to be an excellent DM. Also has clear leadership qualities.

Exactly. The lad hasn't scored in over a year, confidence is probably shot to pieces. Hopefully a show of confidence in the lad from the new manager will get him back to showing what he can do. I really don't think we are seeing the real Origi at the moment

Looks like connor randell got on the bench ahead of him today so I'd be looking elsewhere for somebody to challenge Moreno.

When I watch him I never think he's a specialised DM, would play in a three, ahead of a DM for me.

He's been pretty good in the rest of his performances this season.
    No excuses are needed.

The usual criticisms of him are an inability to defend 1v1s or poor positioning, but today he was poor on the ball - something that hasn't been a problem before this season.

I wouldn't write him off at all yet, although we certainly do need another, different style of left back a 2nd option.
I'd rather have a 2nd, left-footed Clyne for games like today, but an attacking full back who's done a pretty good job of it most weeks this season will have a lot of utility.

Moreno had a poor game but he fits the system well.

    Can you expand on that?

From what I've seen he constantly switches off, decision making is awful, cant retain possession, poor positionally.....I dont want to hammer the guy, I hope he improves but its so frustrating to watch.

Do you mean his pressing with pace and getting forward? Not sure if that fits the system, a steady strong Full back that can actually play would fit much better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,931 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

Apparently Ibe got an earful from Klopp for being slow to get off the bench:

"Hey! Do you want to come on or not?"

I think he's more suited as a DM because he can see everything in front of him. He has time to pick a pass but can run with the ball as well. He also has the speed to make interceptions and his timing of his slide tackles is superb.

Maybe I'm too lenient on him, I just think he can be a great fullback, awareness is definitely his major problem. I'm happy to have him starting in the team anyway.

Thought Origi did well. Was isolated at times but held the ball up well most of the time and was a thorn in their side. He needs a run of games to get his confidence up but it's good to see play for 90 mins.

    Benteke back next week?

Spurs game when he ran the length of the pitch and scored?

Other than the players everybody else has mentioned, I thought Origi did ok for a fella that hasn't really played a lot in the PL.

It seemed like he was getting double or triple teamed every time he got the ball.

Either you're Benteke and just blast the defenders out of it, or you're a normal, human-sized person and your manager has to work out a way to help you out.

Our attack today had very little to recommend it but the lads really kept going - we seemed to manage to get ourselves camped outside Spurs box a few times through force of will rather than because we had any direct threat on goal, pace, craft on the ball or anything else of note.

Hopefully the injuries **** off for a bit and we don't have to see this attacking line up again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,931 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

If we stick to a 4231 I can definitely see Can playing alongside a more dedicated defensive mid. When Henderson comes back I'd love to see him play in front of the two holding.

I really think his drive would be better suited going forward and pressing, he's got a bit of speed that he uses to go by players and carry the ball forward.

Full team, I'd rather him beside Henderson than behind him.

Spurs game when he ran the length of the pitch and scored?

Over a year ago, I almost forgot. The fact you have to go back that far shows how average-poor his performances have been. I think I might be too harsh, but IMO he has all the tools needed to be a good full back, but he's brainless most of the time, just frustrating I suppose.

Pretty much all of the ones he's had this season up until today have been fairly good, in a team everyone was calling a shambles.

It's about having the right tools for the job. Clyne offers nothing going forward and it creates a real weakness on our right flank in attack.

Moreno, on the other hand, has done well going forward this season and hasn't done too much wrong going the other way either. His head was buried up his hole today though.

This BT interviewer is embarrassing. Asking him stupid tabloidy questions. Not one tactical question.

Clyne was very good going forward for Southampton.

Cant agree with that. Average maybe but putting in good performances? Not for me.

Lets hope he improves though. Not the signing I thought we were getting yet.

We really can't depend on Sturridge, at this stage he's a luxury when fit and we should plan accordingly.
He's entering Jamie Redknapp/Darren Anderton levels.

For us he hasn't had the pace, the delivery, any capacity to beat a man and basically has been a total non-event in the final third.

Thankfully he has been immaculate in defence and that's plenty for me from a full back for the time being.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,787 ✭✭✭✭Charlie19

Harry Redknapp has to be the most uncomfortable pundit I've ever noticed, his body language is all over the place and he just doesn't know what to do with his hands.

Though he could be missing a steering wheel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,198 ✭✭✭Talisman

It's funny reading the thread and seeing old prejudices against players shining through. Give the players a chance to prove themselves under the new manager.

The biggest positive - the players looked like they had prepared for the game. Under the previous manager it would have been 11 individuals who met for the first time in the car park before the game.

Mistakes were made but we got away with them, things will improve as the players become more familiar with the new regime.

Yet to really see what Milner is for.

A slightly more attacking understudy to Lucas or an extra man in midfield for tough away games are the only places I see him in this squad if everyone's fit.

Works his arse off and I love that but he's not good enough on the ball.

Yeah I was big fan of signing him and he's disappointed so far.

For tough away games and when going deep in tournaments, (hopefully) with everyone fit I'd stick him on the right of a front three. He can attack and cross and can tuck in and be more defensively minded when we're under pressure. Although he has looked rash with tackles lately as well.

He needs to up his game anyway.

He's a lot quicker than I thought but ya, takes a while to make up his mind, nothing a few more games and experience cant sort out.....seems a decent backup for both Benteke and Sturridge anyway.

Milner is average, hope to see Henderson replace him when he is back and for Can to stay in the side.

Moreno is an airhead. So skittish defending, flanagan at lb for xmas please!
