Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Looking for a cockatoo - looking to rescue instead

    Hi
So I am currently looking into getting a cockatoo and I would preferably like to adopt/rescue before going shopping at a pet shop. Now a lot of the animal rescue centers mainly keep dogs and cats so I've not had too much luck. I am waiting to hear back from <snip>.

Have any of you got suggestions on where to look? If I can't find a rescue I'd like one from a breeder.

    Thanks

You wont find any to rescue. If you are looking to get one i would suggest getting one directly from a breeder. That way it can learn about you and who you are. I have seen Cockatoo's go from owner to owner. The new owner getting a chunk out of his arm.

I'd say you're a hundred times better off getting one from a respected breeder, one that will come to you with no issues. Galah cockatoos are my own personal favourite species :)

I might be wrong, but I imagine most cockatoos up for adoption would be better suited to aviary living rather than going to a home. It would take a skilled keeper to restore the mental health of a larger parrot

Good luck, they're full of potential when cared for correctly :)

There were plenty of wild parrots about where I grew up but I knew of only a couple of people that tried to domesticate one. Came across a few yellow crested cockatoos kept as pets but can't recall of anyone keeping galahs or rosellas. Cockatoos can certainly be cantankerous as feck but funny too. I would imagine getting one from a breeder would be preferable if at all possible otherwise you don't know what you are taking on.
