Is it worth a gamble or a piece of junk.

Nothing wrong with it I'd say...

I've went through a few of these, none of them seem to last very long.

EDIT: Could be just me though.

Not exactly a high stakes gamble at €1.49 !

I've a couple of card readers from various discount stores that gave me no problem.

However if you need faster transfers, eg. transferring gigabytes of photos/files etc, then you may want a USB 3 version, assuming your laptop/desktop supports USB 3. Eg. https://www.memoryc.com/flashmemorycards/readers/black-transcend-highspeed-rdf5-usb3-sdhc-sdxc-microsdhc-microsdxc.html

But I'm sure the above would work just fine for most simple jobs.

I Bought 3 of These ,after a few weeks they stop working.
I think the connector cable is very delicate .in the picture ,its not visible,
cable is about 2 inches long connects to pc usb port.
it,ll last a while if you leave it in a drawer when not using it.
or just buy 1 in argos or maplin.
