Wrong spare car key

    Hi all,
Just wondering if you could help. I bought a car from a dealer recently, however as soon as I drove it home I noticed the spare key they gave didn't work on the car (electronic button). The design of the key was also clearly different so it was obvious the key was for a different car of the same make/model.

I've been in touch with the dealer a few times since to explain the issue but he keeps saying he's trying to get in touch with and waiting to hear back from other people who he sold the same make/model of car as the keys must've been mixed up.

I'm just not sure where to go from here, it's been nearly a month and he has never made the effort to give me any update on what's going on, I've always had to follow up with him. Just got off the phone to him there and I suggested that if there's still no reply from other customers who may have my key, that one should be made up as I'm the one suffering as the customer. He mentioned some rubbish about the possibility that the car may not have a spare, which I just don't buy as its a 2013 and any car I've ever bought had at least 2 keys.

Any suggestions on what to do apart from continuing to hound him? I'm just wondering what to do if in a few weeks there's still nothing happening. It's annoying because my gf doesn't have her own key for the car and if anything happens the key we do have we're in a bit of trouble.
I should mention I live in Australia, I know consumer law is probably a bit different but I'd still appreciate any next steps I can take. On the sales receipt nothing is mentioned about any keys.

    Thanks in advance
    KMA

In some instances the spare key is different to the main key and is used for manual entry to the vehicle, but not much use for starting.

Google the make and model and see what the keys are like.

A saare electronic key from a specialist car key cutting place is about €80 here.

Consumer rights in Australia seem to be very similar to here but there's likely to be differences depending on which state you're in or bought the car.

The first step is to get a price from a few other dealers for a replacement spare key and recoding. Then check with the consumer agency for your state as to your rights and procedures. Check if you can replace the key yourself and claim the cost from him rather than having to wait for him to provide a key.

You may have to bring the seller to your state's small claims court/tribunal process.

Unless you have to go to an AD to get a replacement key blade and fob.
Volvo hit me for over €300 for that last year.
