Thanks for that. I recall for the traditional one they used to finish it by jumping up with their hands in the air (if my memory serves me). Now when they do it, it's identical except for the end where they finish with their hands on their hips and they don't jump. Was there a reason for this slight change?

I saw a documentary where they were talking to a few players about it and what they said was that the purpose of the haka (for the rugby team) was drawing on the spirits/power of their ancestors and that given their ancestors were technically in the ground it made more sense to finish it still connected to them, that is by not jumping.

The difference in standard between this match and any of those involving the NH teams is startling.

I don't agree with that. It's only 20 mins in and it hasn't been that great of a spectacle.

NMS being targeted with that kick. No discipline from NZ so far.

SA have responded well to the try, punishing NZ when they get into their half

    What a steal by Louw

NZ giving away a crazy amount of penalties.

Well would you look at this. A kick-chase tactic is beating NZ at the moment. I wonder will that make anyone who has been bemoaning how Ireland have been playing change their minds at all?

NZ getting pinged a lot here in the first stanza

I can't believe he's pulled South Africa from a probable try because of a penalty against New Zealand. That's disgraceful. In a close match like this every try is vital.

It's rarely been a yellow throughout the WC

    He didn't.

He was giving a penalty to NZ until the TMO asked him to check something.

Where's the consistency with the refs? Neck rolls have gotten yellows in other matches.

He didn't. Penalty against SA superseded by foul play penalty against NZ

The original penalty was to New Zealand prior to tmo call for the other penalty.

NZ need to get some points from all this pressure

    New Zealand 7-9 down

I don't hate McCaw as much as some do but it's pretty hilarious how Garces is having none of him here :D

Nonus been great but lucky there, a second or 2 away from advantage over and a try for JP.

TMO told him about awarding the penalty Carter missed mid-play. Why could he not inform of him too of the neckgrab midplay, advantage over and let Pietersen go..

SA discipline has been good. All that pressure from NZ around their 22 and only one kickable penalty conceded.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 35,514 ✭✭✭✭efb

Maybe Garces thinks he has a chance of the final???

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,161 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

Bok lineout killing them. Can't get anything out of all their penalties.

Garces needs to give yc warning to nz. How many penalties is that

Very similar to the Wales match. SA not really looking much like scoring but poor discipline from NZ and a good kicker keeping them in it.
