Another lurker here (me lurk you longtime etc), but thought I'd stick my head above the parapet and say hi, since I'm in for Berlin :)

Had my first Berlin marathon stress dream last night, wherein it was pitch dark at the start line, then I had to rush back to my hotel to change my shoes (which turned out to be soggy five-finger things) and then I looked down to discover I had super hairy legs arrgh! Obviously this was a concern from the point of view of aerodynamic efficiency... :P
This is my 3rd marathon and I'm feeling somewhat taper flat/fat at this point - how's everyone else coping?

I'm not even going to attempt the table, so if any of you are feeling generously inclined: PB 3:27:01 Goal 3:19:59 Bib: 33191 (it seems my PB and goal could almost be copied and pasted from the Boardsie above me! :D )

    Viel gl ck!

Haven't had any such dreams I'm happy to say. All my runs recently have been fairly flat and sluggish. About what I'd expect at this stage I guess!

Not sure I mentored it before, but I pulled down the registration lists for Berlin and IIRC, there were around 450 Irish runners. Obviously, given that you have to register nearly a year in advance - many runners won't make the start line, but that's a pretty staggering number. There's going to be a lot of tricolours Ashling the course!

Heavy rain in the YR.no forecast now. Typical Irish summer weather.

That's a much bigger amount than I would have thought. Tricolours galore alright

I'm refusing to look at the weather forecast ( any more than 20 times a day) rain works for me but rules out the beergaden for the post run beers!

Anyone got venue suggestions that we could arrange a meetup in afterwards?

    Looking at Krusty's suggestions:

    1) Immediately after the race: There'll be lots of beer/pretzel/bratwurst stands and picnic tables, just outside the exit area. Maybe we could line-up some non-running volunteers to grab a table, bring an Irish flag and meet up for a couple of post-race beverages to swap stories of victory in the face of adversity? - still on for this

    2) If the weather's nice, there's a pretty famous beer-garden called Prater Garden, that serves good German beer and food until 1am. There's a restaurant inside for heartier meals. It's about 3km away from the Brandenburg Gate (to use that as a reference landmark), but is well serviced by public transport. - probably out now given the forecast?

    3) If the weather's not so great, another pretty famous spot is the German bar/restaurant: Gambrinus. Hearty German fare and lots of local German beers. 1.7kms from Brandenburg Gate, and a couple of stops on the S1, S2, etc. Like the look of this place

Ok fine I'll nail my colours to the wobbly mast :o

Suddenly it's less than a week away and feeling very, very real. I'm excited though, this is what we've trained for all these months and the hard work's done at this stage. Looking forward to meeting up with some of you for a few brews afterwards!

Best of luck out there everyone - raging my entry is going to waste but seemingly making that decision all that time ago was a good thing as there is no way I'd be able to travel there this weekend.

Totes jealous. Hope it all goes to plan for you all.

One of my kids appears to have a tummy bug. I had to clean pukey sheets earlier.
Do I : a) move back in with my mother for the week or b) just leave for Berlin now without the wife and kids.....they will probably get over it in time and sure they haven't seen me for months with all the training so they may not miss me anyway..

I should have seen this coming!
I sat in the coal hole in 2013 in awe of Krusty & KielyU who has just ran sub6 min miles around the streets of London.
If I joined that club on Sunday id be a very happy camper.
I'm still nicely perched on my fence here!

Good man.. I've seen some of your race times recently and they'd suggest there's more there for the taking. Obviously not suggesting you should aim for more (with 4 days to go!), but just wondering if the training hasn't entirely gone to plan, you lack confidence, or you're just being conservative about your published times?

You're on the money there. And I can vouch for the fact there's been nothing wrong with his training.....(quite the opposite in fact)

Hey Krusty, don't mind me, im just a bit off a needy child.
Training has gone exactly to plan as it happens. By far the best block of marathon training I have put in and without injury (sorry.....I know its a painful subject right now....note: no sympathy given) Hope your seeing improvement though!
My issue would always have been committing time and getting the miles in. Before this block I would have perhaps averaged 50’ish miles a week in marathon training (4 runs a week). That avg. is now 71 since May having just done a quick calculation (and that included a few intentional step back weeks at around 50 miles). I have done 80+ on 4 occasions.
We have also managed to build the marathon pace into the long runs since June. Gradually increasing the distance from 10, up to 16 miles mp. We have repeated the 16mp twice…..thats a huge confidence builder.
When I say “we” I am including ROLEX in that. We train together and he has effectively been coaching our little group all year. His input has been invaluable. He is great shape as well which im sure will be borne out on Sunday.
Only reason im not bubbling is that I haven’t run a decent half this year. Id like the confidence a good half going into this. I ran 74:28 last year, did the national half in August in 74:50 on what you know was a tough day, wind and hills etc. Clonmel a week later would have been a much better option for me but I was away. If I ran a half tomorrow in decent conditions im positive that I would run sub 74.

Ill stop moaning now, so this doesn’t turn into self help forum.
Ill try to update the chart now as well…but will surely fail!

2 x 16 @MP is very impressive. Were they around 6 min/mile or faster? I'd ignore that national half. You sauntered by me with a kilometer to go, and sure I ran an easy 72:xx a few weeks later in better conditions (on a flat course). Anyway, best of luck with it. Hopefully see you after for a celebratory pint or two.

A high of 22℃, according to the Norwegians, but the key point is they're predicting 12℃ between 8am and 2pm. The temperature will obviously rise as the morning progresses, but for the first crucial couple of hours it shouldn't be too bad.

Of course, being in an urban environment with tall buildings around can add a degree or two....fingers crossed, though.
