Thanks on sorting it out . I haven't pressed the button on the e-mail yet so don't have number will update.

I will be in the the last corral which by all accounts will be crowded. I expect there will be a bit of weaving done. Do I try to adjust the target pace slightly ? Got caught out the last time - paced exactly for 430 and was caught 4 min short. I know the garmin coverage is a bit dodgy and I should pace by feel etc etc but what kind of splits should I be looking for?

Just print yourself a pace band Bluesquare, and forget about using Garmin pace.

I've been going through the website, and can find no information regarding the timing intervals. Does anyone know whether we are going to have mile/km markers, and especially the 5km timechecks previously mentioned?

i am sure markers are only in KM. i have 2 time bands made up, 1 for mile splits and 1 for 5k time splits

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,911 ✭✭✭tailgunner

It definitely mentions the 5km timechecks on the website.

    http://www.bmw-berlin-marathon.com/en/race-week/runners-info.html#page/18

Not sure what to do about a pace band. Probably no point in making up one in miles if there are no mile markers, so might just go for one with 5k splits.

I'll go with a pace band in 5km splits and work off that. I'll leave the watch in miles though as I've no idea really about paces in km.

Here's the course video (think it's from 2014):

It's difficult to spot (because of the video speed), but if you're eagle-eyed, you can see km markers every km, and I believe that after every 5km marker there's a clock.

All good news. Think I'll make up a 5k pace band, and leave the watch in miles. Luckily my 5k splits are exactly 22.30, so if something goes wrong I can have some fun mental arithmetic distraction on my way around.

You can do up a pace band to whatever time on http://paceyourrace.asics.com and pick it up at the expo. They also give you a little map that shows the route and the time you are expected at the various points on the course.

  • Registered Users Posts: 126 ✭✭loughie

I have ran Berlin in 2014 and 2015. Few tips\observations which might be of benefit.
Expo get in and get out. Can be very busy. Know they have changed the location this year. Don't forget your passport when picking up your number. Very strict on race no. pickup with ID. I'd say it would be very difficult if you were trying to pickup someone else's race no. Don't be too late getting to the start line. There is bag drop\toilets area you enter only with your race number which is usually busy before hand all to the right of the start.
Its a bit tight due to volumes the walk up to your corral from the bag drop area so don't leave it too late, get moving early as there entries to your corral all along the way. The further up the corrals you are it will thin out but there is a lot people trying to get into the start line corrals.
You have to show your number to get into your corral. If your number is for corral E don't try and get into corral C, they do stop you. Once you get into your corral move over to the left hand side. Its less congested and you can move up your corral alot easier. Please don't rock up to Kipsang and Bekele if you got in at corral D!

Race markers is all KM's (no miles here). There are 5KM balloon markers I think. Don't depend on your GPS watch splits for your time. 2014 for me measured 26.49 and 2015 measured 26.7 miles. Use your watch as a stopwatch and a pace band. Use GPS watch with caution for mile splits, some of my splits seemed quite fast but using stopwatch off 5k markers kept me on track. For me I was trying to keep to 21 minute 5KM's. Worked out well for me. Mile 21 on GPS was really short both years!!

Water stations can be a bit manic due to the volumes of people and its plastic cups so just be careful of a bit of argy bargy, time it well to get your water.
Only one gel station somewhere after halfway so don't expect multiple gel stations round the course.

There is great support all the round the course and the weather is usually spot on, forecast looks (hopefully) same again this year.

If I can think of anything else I'll add. Its a great race so enjoy!
