Laptop CMOS battery replacement

I was wondering if when replacing the CMOS battery in my laptop, do I need to get the whole assembly (as in the pic below) or do I just get the battery itself?

Queston: Does a laptop, with battery removed and not plugged in cause the cmos batt to discharge over time ?
