Plus as PM are part of Nightline they also have all the delivery van and associated costs.

Whereas PC (Fastway) and PW (DPD) just have to get deliveries down from the North to a depot and then to a drop off store/address, using their existing vans which are already on the road.

Not sure i understand your logic here. PM have a massively simpler job and operation. All they need is trucks and vans running depot to depot. The trucks and vans were probably running daily from A to B, half full. Now they will just have a slightly heavier load.

There is massive extra work, time, milage, depreciation dropping stuff door to door. No wonder PM added it recently for about a fiver extra.

I must say that this is a excellent service. Got my package delivered to the address up north yesterday and it arrived at my house this morning :D

One other benefit of Parcel Motel is the ability to send parcels from locker to locker, I've saved a lot of money doing that compared to postage rates.

Placed mine in locker in limerick at 3pm on Monday and it was put in a locker 4 days later. Same price as an post which would have been there much quicker. Buyer wanted the locker option but 4 days is woeful.

Also I found you can only put your item in your locker. Thought that was weird because I'm sending it so it shouldn't matter.

Another benefit that some (including me) will find useful is that they'll hold parcels for up to 21 days at the local depot at no extra charge.

The length of time seems to differ around the country, it can be slow at times but price wise I have saved loads with Parcel Motel especially with weight on sending parcels.

I don't understand your second sentence. What do you mean by 'your' locker? Do you mean the motel your registered with?

    This.

I sent an item (locker to address) to Dublin on a Monday. Any other service including An Post would deliver it on the Tuesday. My item arrived in Dublin on the Tuesday alright but hung around with the ParcelMotel team for the day. It hung around on the Wednesday too. I contacted them but was told this was standard for the service and that this wouldn't change. On Thursday they said farewell to it and it was finally delivered. I had to apologise to the recipient who had been questioning me as to it's whereabouts. If I had known I wouldn't have used it but I do now.
It's pretty useless to anybody selling items and expecting good feedback.

I'm pretty sure it's the slowest delivery service in Ireland.

For anyone who has stated here that the oversize charges with PM are transparent and fair then this is the chair that cost €112 euro for them to accept in their Dublin depot.
I explained it to the guy in the Cork depot where I collected it and he was in shock and couldn't believe it but said he would contact parcel motel for a refund or a credit as it was that absurd.
And to be clear I lifted the chair with one hand. 10kg max!

Ok we get it, you've got big guns you can lift 10kg with one hand, well done!

Why would you even consider Parcelmotel for this item which clearly is a large piece of furniture?

There are specialist providers for those kind of things.

Even if the weight is only 10 kg, the dimensions are way larger than a normal parcel delivery company wants to take care off without extra charge.

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,149 ✭✭✭✭Berty

I think most would agree Parcel Motel isn't the type of company for a chair like that. If it doesn't fit in a locker then don't order it.

I've had 2 things arrive into Parcel Motel where the sender figured it would be fun to send a mahoosive box. I was once charged €14.50 by PM for receiving an item 6mm longer than the locker allowed. It wasn't listed what the allowances or limits were at the time so I got a refund and only charged the €3.50(at the time) after challenging them.

Every single time PM take longer than 1 working day to delivery my item to the locker(when I can prove they signed for it in Newtownabbey) I request my costs refunded because "of a failure by PM to provide me with the service they promise and I pay for" which is 1 working day. Not once have they refused to credit me the €3.95 back but they've to be pressed on it. They stopped refunding also, just crediting now.

As I explained in my original post my family member who ordered it for was told that it was Flat Packed so he took their word for it and I took his word for it.
You must be completely blind or have some strange allegiance to parcel motel if you think charging €112 for a single fireside armchair is fair.
Especially when the employee at my local depot who scanned it for me was in shock and said he would ask them to credit me.

Neither of your assumptions about me are true.

My opinion if it's fair or not is not relevant, there is a pricing model that parcel motel uses. Take measurements of the chair and see what the price should be according to their cost calculator. If it's €112 tuff luck.

Quite clearly the right thing to do would have been to ask the company for the dimensions of the parcel before asking them to send it. If you order furniture you know that Parcelmotel might not be the right place to use, independently if it was supposed to be flat packed or assembled. Even a self assembly flat pack chair has large dimension by the nature of the final product.

Why don't you complain to the company that you got the chair from, as you say they provided you with wrong information. Clearly the miss-sold you something because flat pack would require assembly while they send you an assembled chair, clearly not what was ordered. The goods you got were obviously not the goods you ordered.

And there is your risk with Parcelmotel or DPD or any of the other providers. You cant isolate yourself against errors that the vendor makes. If they deliver something that is wrong you will only notice once its processed at Parcelmotel, too late to refuse acceptance. But when you decided to take Parcelmotel you must have known that risk.

I had items being send (especially by Amazon) that were just slightly bigger than they should and got stung with the charges, that is the way it is. I did know it was a risk as it's known for amazon to have bigger boxes than needed.

Just got this from my Amazon order. Looks like DPD are closed at the weekend...

Not a good start. Think I will be sticking with Parcel Motel. I think this order is going to get messy...

I know that my local depot is open on Saturdays, but don't know what they do up there.

Why not drop the depot a line and ask for their opening times: depot79@dpd.ie .

Might give you a faster answer than the parcelwizzard customer service.

The max dimensions are 60x40x40cm. Does anybody know how much PW charge if my parcel exceeds those limits?
From PM calculator, it will cost me a fortune.

First time I visited IKEA was when picking up a telly from Interlink ;)
yes I had to pay the M50 toll but one less chance for a courier to drop it :p

€50 less than buying it locally from the Irish branch of the same retailer. And at the end of the day that's what it's all about.

Protip if you get a cheap flat screen telly , plan on getting external speakers or using an old HiFi, even old computer speakers are an improvement, and also colour calibrate the display. Check out NHK HD on satellite, the outside broadcasts are gorgeous.

    Anyway...

I'm assuming PW will contact me when my delivery arrives so I can chose Home or Work to deliver to ?

IMHO work is better because I'll get it sooner and it's not taking the pi$$ since they get deliveries there all the time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,149 ✭✭✭✭Berty

Received e-mail at 00:01 about Delivery tomorrow(cannot be edited online) but could with the link in e-mail.

Changed delivery address to certain location around my house so we'll see if they bother with it(other companies use it). If so then I'm happy with DPD except the potential they cannot receive deliveries to Antrim on Saturday.

Heck, first 3 deliveries are Free

From PM calculator, it will cost me a fortune.

The DPD Ireland site says the standard courier tariff will apply and remains silent as to what that might be- other than indicating the standard dimensional weight formula:
The volumetric calculation used to distribute goods throughout Ireland and Britain is:L x W x D divided by 6000 CU cms = 1 Kilo
    where L = Length, W = Width, and D = Depth

    e.g. 50 x 40 x 30 divided by 6,000 = 10.0kg

If this is used for oversized parcels - with double the denominator then dimensional weight will be half that of PM. The charges that apply to that weight judging by UK tariffs may be quite different eg. Freight parcels (31-99 KG) for next day collection & delivery within the England-Wales area incur a £27.67 charge on the first 5KG and 60p per KG after that.

Also, for 'heavyweight' consignments (> 31.5 kg) between UK - mainland Europe, the volumetric formula is identical to PM's ie. denominator drops to 3000.

Received a package today. No issues. It arrived almost midway through the estimated hour delivery time.

Has anyone checked the 'My Deliveries' section of the Parcel Wizard website? The package is showing on the wrong side for me. It was on the Past Deliveries side and has now (after delivery) moved to the Future Deliveries side. Minor complaint.

I ordered a bike from the UK last week and got it delivered to Parcel Motel, the oversize charge was 70 euro.

    Length: 184CM
    Height: 113CM
    Width: 20CM
    Weight: 17 KG

I emailed Parcel Motel for a quote before I placed my order and they responded within an hour. Anytime I have had to contact Parcel Motel for customer service it has been a good experience.

18 months ago, I emailed Parcel Motel for a quote on an item with box dimensions 120 x 180 x 25cm and the oversize quote I was given was 112 euro, which was way too pricey, so it seems like they may have adjusted their oversized item pricing.
